Baton Rouge, LA

DEPARTMENT: Conservation Programs
REPORTS TO: Director, Conservation Science
DURATION: Full-Time

GULF RESTORATION PROGRAM: Ocean Conservancy’s Gulf Restoration program (GRP) is a dynamic initiative focused on the restoration and enhancement of the Gulf of Mexico following the BP Deepwater Horizon oil disaster. Ocean Conservancy has provided strategic leadership in addressing key threats facing the Gulf of Mexico for over two decades. Key accomplishments include successfully promoting the use of fishing gear that reduced incidental taking of endangered Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles, transforming regional fishery management systems to focus on science based management plans that end overfishing and restore depleted fish populations, and launching the largest global volunteer event of its kind—the International Coastal Cleanup. We are now combining our regional expertise with a seasoned team of Exxon Valdez oil spill experts to ensure the effective restoration and enhancement of the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem and its dependent communities. The Conservation Biologist will support the goals of the GRP and work in concert with our team of professionals to ensure a science-based and community supported restoration and enhancement effort. Ocean Conservancy envisions a healthy and productive Gulf of Mexico that supports resilient ocean ecosystems and coastal communities.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: The Conservation Biologist provides day-to-day, on-the-ground science support for Ocean Conservancy’s Gulf Restoration Program (GRP) in Louisiana and the Gulf coast. The Conservation Biologist will work as part of Ocean Conservancy’s restoration science team to understand, describe, and communicate the importance of the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem and resulting impacts to its fish, wildlife and habitats from the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill and other sources of environmental degradation. The Conservation Biologist will also assist in identifying and evaluating projects aimed at the restoration and enhancement of the Gulf Mexico ecosystem.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Compiles, interprets, and synthesizes scientific data on the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem, including its fish, wildlife and habitats (coastal and marine).
  • Tracks the status of studies carried out as part of the Natural Resources Damage Assessment (NRDA) as well as studies carried outside the NRDA. Works to understand what is being studied and to identify science gaps.
  • Works as part of a Gulf restoration science team to identify, analyze, and describe impacts from the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster with data from government Natural Resources Damage Assessment studies and other sources.
  • Works as part of a Gulf restoration science team to identify, evaluate, and describe restoration and conservation needs and options in relation to the impacts of the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster and other sources of environmental degradation.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of a Master’s degree in biology, wildlife biology, ecology, environmental, natural resources, fisheries, or related fields, preferably with an emphasis on marine systems.
  • Experience with the location, acquisition, organization, analysis, synthesis, and reporting of a wide range of scientific and natural resource information and data. Training and experience with statistical analyses and presentation of data.
  • Three years or more of professional conservation, scientific, natural resources management or other relevant work preferred.
  • Understanding of natural resources and environmental laws and policies and the linkages between science and public policy are highly desired.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to formulate and communicate complex ideas for a variety of audiences, are essential.
  • Ability to work under supervision of other scientists, as well as part of diverse project teams, is required.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and function as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in the Gulf of Mexico region.
