Description

The Conservation Biologist Associate is responsible for coordinating inventories and monitoring of rare reptiles and amphibians on NCC properties, and developing effective conservation actions. The Conservation Biologist Associate works closely with other NCC Conservation Biologists to inventory NCC properties and to implement conservation actions. The Conservation Biologist Associate will also deliver education and outreach programs.

Key Responsiblities

  • Conduct surveys and inventories of NCC properties for rare reptile and amphibian species using standardized techniques
  • Coordinate field work, including all administrative costs, equipment needs
  • Collect habitat data using ELC methods, as well as mapping out important microhabitat features
  • Coordinate and report on relevant conservation actions as outlined in Property Management Plans and Natural Conservation Area Plans
  • Develop outreach materials and programs to target key audiences, including landowners
  • Assist in the development and delivery of two workshops aimed at training conservation and enforcement professionals on reptile conservation
  • Identify and develop new opportunities to advance conservation goals through partnerships with other organisations, including academic institutions/ individual researchers
  • Manage habitat and species data and ensure data records are submitted to the Ontario Nature – Ontario Reptile and Amphibian Atlas and/or the Natural Heritage Information Centre
  • Develop, field-test and refine effectiveness measures for monitoring reptile and amphibian populations
  • Supervise seasonal staff, including determining work schedule
  • Other duties as assigned by the Conservation Science and Planning Manager or Conservation Biologist– Ontario Region
Skills and Aptitudes
  • Graduated with a university degree in biology, environmental sciences or a related discipline within the last 5 years
  • Minimum of 3 years experience working in conservation
  • Ability to identify all of Ontario’s amphibians and reptiles by sight or sound, and an excellent knowledge of their ecology and conservation needs
  • Proven ability to conduct fieldwork, particularly of amphibian and reptile species, in a variety of conditions and terrains
  • Experience with Ecological Land Classification and habitat mapping
  • Excellent research and communication skills
  • Experience with data management
  • Experience presenting materials to both the general public and other scientists
  • Highly motivated, analytical and detail oriented
  • Self-motivated with superior time management skills and ability to work to meet deadlines
  • Certification in first aid and CPR or willingness to attend training
  • Track record of working well within team structure
  • Class G unrestricted drivers license (mandatory)
  • Able to follow a flexible schedule, including weekend hours, and to work in outdoor conditions
  • Proficient with word processing, database management, and spreadsheet software
