Under direct supervision, the Conservation Biologist Apprentice assists the Conservation Biologist in monitoring and managing MetroParks natural areas. Specific duties include the following assignments: assist in lake, river, and stream surveys of fish including the operation boats, outboard motors and electroshocking equipment, enter biological data into Word, Excel, and Access, maintain wildlife and fisheries equipment including boats, outboard engines, 4X4 trucks, all-terrain vehicles, pumps, and high-pressure sprayers, participate on MetroParks Prairie Burn team, apply herbicides to control invasive plants, conduct surveys for rare plants and animals, utilize GPS/GIS to map natural features, serve as a member of the MetroParks deer management team, and assist with nuisance trapping program.

Candidates must have or be enrolled in an undergraduate degree in Biology, Ecology, Natural Resources, Wildlife/Fisheries Management, Environmental Science, or related field. An Ohio Divers License, which is insurable by Five Rivers MetroParks’ insurance carrier, is required. Weekly schedule is 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday (32 hours). Occasionally, night and weekend work may be required.

Salary Range: $7.61 per hour. Limited free housing is available at some MetroParks sites for apprentices not from the Dayton area and relocating here for their apprenticeship.
