This professional-level position is responsible for implementing assigned workplans for the Field Conservation Programs division of Defenders of Wildlife.  Responsibilities include developing and implementing programs, regional strategies, campaigns, projects, workplans, publications, educational materials, and reports to conserve targeted species and their habitat and increase the public's awareness of the problems associated with at-risk, endangered, and threatened species.  Current program focus areas include promoting wolf conservation campaigns and addressing concerns related to predator control campaigns in Alaska.

Current priority projects include: developing, implementing and fundraising for Great Lakes gray wolf and Southeast red wolf recovery programs; managing the Endangered Species Reward Fund; serving as the DC liaison for the Alaska aerial gunning and predator control programs; and, serving as a strategic advisor for the field offices on wolf issues by informing them of D.C. activities as well as field interests in meetings in DC.

Programmatic and technical assistance will be provided to Vice President for Field Conservation Programs and other staff members of the division, with priorities assigned by the Vice President for Field Conservation Programs. Position serves as the division’s liaison to establish and maintain effective working relationships on wolf and other carnivore issues with other staff, Defenders’ members, the general public, state and federal agencies, elected officials and their staff, and leading NGOs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop, coordinate and implement local, state and/or national strategies, campaigns, programs, projects, work plans, budgets, publications, educational materials and reports for each assigned program area;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with leading conservation biologists, scientists, agency administrators, members of Congress, Congressional staff and leading NGOs;
  • Represent Defenders in coalitions, public meetings, hearings, press events, conferences, national and international forums, and in general communications with public officials, the media, members, the donor community and the public;
  • Identify, inform and mobilize citizen activists, including Defenders' members and supporters, in areas of particular importance;
  • Assist all appropriate Defenders’ departments with tasks relating to education, development, publications and media coverage or any other initiative that involves the program area;
  • Work with membership and development staff to raise monies to support conservation activities by developing fundraising and membership solicitation materials that are effective and consistent with other organization materials; and representing Defenders and soliciting membership at select educational events;
  • Monitor Defenders’ web page and insure related program materials remain current;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor and be an energetic, enthusiastic and committed advocate for all Defenders’ programs and for expanding Defenders’ membership;

 

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) and preferably advanced degree in Biology, Natural Resources, Public Policy, Education, or related discipline

Experience: 3+ years of experience working on wildlife conservation issues. Other relevant experience with education, public policy, legislative procedures, grassroots organizing, communications, editing and/or development.  

Other:

  • Experience developing, implementing and managing conservation campaigns.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state agencies, laws, treaties and policies dealing with use and conservation of natural resources.
  • Strong writing, media and communications skills.
  • Ability to conduct research, analyze information and produce quality work products in a consistent, efficient and timely manner.
