AWF is currently seeking an experienced Livestock Manager to support the operations of an integrated livestock and wildlife conservancy in Manyara, Tanzania.The successful candidate will be responsible for managing Manyara Conservancy, a  large and complex estate (national parks, conservancies, reserves, sanctuaries, farms or forests) to develop it into a self-sustaining property that integrates wildlife conservation, tourism and livestock; benefits the surrounding communities; protects the ecological integrity of the land and broader landscape; and contributes to the local and national economy.

For more than 50 years, the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) has been a key player in African Conservation and sustainable development. AWF is seeking an experienced and highly motivated individual to manage Conservancy operations in Manyara, Makuyuni Tanzania.

Key responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing Manyara Conservancy, a  large and complex estate (national parks, conservancies, reserves, sanctuaries, farms or forests) to develop it into a self-sustaining property that integrates wildlife conservation, tourism and livestock; benefits the surrounding communities; protects the ecological integrity of the land and broader landscape; and contributes to the local and national economy. Operationally this will entail managing the ranch and overseeing all its activities such as wildlife conservation, livestock management and tourism. In addition, the position will manage community relations, minimize conservancy expenses and maximize revenue to ensure long-term ranch self-sustainability, strong conservation and benefits to communities; manage all ranch  staff to ensure motivation, high productivity and adaptive management, supervise, monitor, and maintain ranch assets at highest level, manage all logistics to ensure compliance with set regulations and efficiencies, oversee management of all ranch budgets, expenses and revenue, ensure clear record keeping, accurate budgeting and compliance with AWF financial procedures; keep abreast with local and regional conservation and community initiatives and inform relevant AWF teams as needed. This position will be based at Manyara Ranch and will report to the Maasai Steppe Landscape Director and Chief Operating Officer (COO).

The successful candidate will have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in conservation, natural resource management, tourism management or related.
  • A minimum of seven years’ experience managing a conservancy, sanctuary, national park, or integrated wildlife, livestock and tourism ranch.
  • Demonstrated ability to think creatively, solve problems effectively and manage a business efficiently.
  • A strong drive for results with demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a member of team; to work with a diversity of stakeholders and communities; and to effectively coordinate, lead and motivate a multidisciplinary staff.
  • In-depth knowledge of contemporary approaches to conservation, livestock development and natural resource management.
  • Demonstrated commitment to wildlife conservation and natural resource management.
  • Experience in designing and managing wildlife management projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in remote areas, in cross-cultural situations, with diverse economic and professional background, in both public and private sectors
  • Excellent verbal and written communications (English and Kiswahili); computer literacy essential. Knowledge of local languages ( Maa) is an added advantage
  • A firm understanding of pastoralist customary livestock practices and community engagement processes.
