Description

This project strives the conserve the land and marine environment of a beautiful Caribbean island. It has a variety of ongoing projects for whom volunteer workers are required. The conch (see photo) is a type of enormous sea snail that is a endangered species in local waters. Volunteers help out in efforts to conserve the conch and repopulate local marine conservation areas. Lionfish are an aggressive fish native to the Pacific Ocean. Over recent years they have become an invasive species throughout the Caribbean, greatly damaging both the coral and native marine life through their predatory instincts and rapid reproduction. Volunteers get involved in efforts to control the spread of this invasive fish. Marine geneticists or marine biology volunteers would be particularly useful for both of these projects. Volunteers are also required for an Iguana repopulation project, a sustainable permaculture / sustainable agriculture project, and a project to establish a museum to extensively document the fascinating history and culture of the island. This project provides a fantastic opportunity to help conserve a very fragile (UNESCO Biosphere Reserve) environment whilst living on a tropical paradise.

The project costs £300 per month which includes a family homestay (English and Spanish speaking) and all meals.
