Position overview

The Communications Officer will help develop and implement the strategy for all communications, including the web site, blogs, policy reports and briefings, events, media outreach, and constituent outreach. The communications officer will work closely with senior policy and program staff within CCAP to help motivate, edit and shape external communications materials. The materials should position CCAP as an innovator in climate policy; distinguish CCAP from others working in the field; and inform and engage key stakeholders. Expected salary range is 55,000 – 70,000 USD per annum depending on the position and the individual’s qualifications.

Key responsibilities

Messaging and Materials development

  • Manage the preparation, editing and distribution of CCAP’s key communications products, including: press releases, op-editorials, newsletters, blogs, release of policy reports, events, fact sheets, brochures, and website updates.
  • Work with leadership and policy staff to identify communications opportunities on a consistent, ongoing basis; to determine messaging, timing and appropriate packaging for release of this information
  • Ensure high-quality editorial standards, consistency of message, and consistent design and style for all CCAP’s communications. Copyedit staff-generated content to ensure consistent messaging via succinct, compelling prose.
  • Oversee regular updating and relevance of CCAP’s Web site as the organization’s primary communications vehicle.
  • Oversee development of communications materials for the CCAP Board of Directors.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate annual communications plan in collaboration with the CCAP team.

Management

  • Oversee external contractors as needed (e.g., print designers, editors, web developers and database vendors) to ensure exceptional service and results for CCAP’s investment.
  • Oversee the partnership with CCAP’s public relations consultant.
  • Oversee the design and logistics support of all CCAP constituent outreach events.
  • Coordinate webpage maintenance and updating. Ensure that new and consistent information (article links, stories, and events) is posted regularly.
  • Track and measure the level of engagement within the network over time.
  • Oversee the maintenance and categorization of a database of CCAP key stakeholders.
  • Supervise communications staff and intern(s).

Qualifications and characteristics

  • Five to 7 years of communications experience in an issues-oriented nonprofit, think tank or academic environment. Experience in a well-run communications shop with established processes and systems.
  • Outstanding and well-honed writing and editing skills. Strong oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated project management skills.
  • A solid understanding of best practices for content, tone, style and organizational structure for an effective Web site.
  • Ability to gain the trust of technical experts and senior staff.
  • Experience overseeing and working with outside vendors (e.g., graphic designers and web developers).
  • Experience supervising administrative staff and interns.
  • A self-motivated, creative individual who is willing to take initiative and shows good judgment.
  • Versatility and flexibility in dealing with the realities of smaller, fast-paced organizations.
  • Professional experience in and knowledge of the clean air industry and related environmental and policy issues preferred but not required.
  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree required.
