NEPCon is a mission-driven organization working to ensure responsible use of natural resources worldwide. Our core activity areas are certification, capacity building and environmental projects in forestry, wood processing and agricultural sectors. NEPCon has nearly 100 staff, located throughout Europe, and in Russia, U.S.A., Australia and Asia, and operates through 12 legal entities.

NEPCon has engaged in sustainability services for more than 20 years, working with well-recognised certification schemes such as FSC and PEFC. In addition, we have set developed our own schemes for carbon footprint management certification and LegalSource certification of due diligence in legal timber sourcing. In addition, NEPCon engages in international development projects that help to achieve our mission. Our projects work to help develop sustainability standards, conduct related research, develop knowledge in related fields, and build capacity among stakeholders.

NEPCon is currently seeking a Communications Manager to lead our organisational communications work, both internal and external. The overall responsibility of the Communications Manager is to strengthen NEPCon’s public relations through effective management and development of NEPCon’s brand and reputation. The Communications Manager has the overall responsibility for implementation of NEPCon’s strategic communications plan.

We are looking for a leader with a passion for helping to ensure environmental sustainability, particularly for mainstreaming sustainability among producers and supply chains. You will be part of an expanding organisation where we are used to working virtually across continents and offices. The position is based in our headquarters office in Denmark (Copenhagen or Aarhus), with the potential to be based in other locations for the right candidate. The communications department currently has one full-time employee in addition to the Manager, and we expect to expand the department very soon to accommodate growing capacity needs for our international projects. In addition, the Manager will work closely with a staff member designated as the communications contact point for each of our regional offices.

Primary Responsibilities

-         To implement NEPCon’s strategic communications plan, including making sure the plan is transferred as necessary to the work plan of not only the communications department at headquarters level, but also among NEPCon’s Regional Offices as necessary to ensure communications work is being implemented at the local level.

-         To keep up-to-date on current trends and developments, including regular monitoring and evaluation of impacts, successes and opportunities for improvements and on-going refinement of the communications strategy

-         To manage the overall execution of all communications activities, including branding, media outreach, content marketing, digital communications including web and social media, crisis communications, client communication, stakeholder engagement & public relations, and internal support through staff guidance and training. This includes for executing work directly and as well as overseeing work done by internal and external staff.

-         Provide guidance to NEPCon’s internal Marketing & Communications Network, as well as to all Regional Office Managers, on communications-related matters.

-         To work closely with the relevant NEPCon experts as necessary, including with the IT Manager and webmaster on digital platform management and with the Client Relations Manager on client-facing materials and communications. 

-         To manage the administration of the Communications Department, including HR related functions for department employees, managing the department budget, etc.

Requirements

-         Have a minimum of 5 years of demonstrated professional experience in communications work, both internal and external, preferably for an environmental organisation

-         Experience in environmental certification systems preferred, such as FSC, SBP and/or SAN.

-         Good leadership and supervisory skills, and experience in maintenance of an effective communications network of individuals across an international organisation

-         Education level of a Bachelor’s degree or higher, preferably in communications, public relations, marketing or a related environmental field

-         Native or expert-level fluency in English is a must; fluency in other language(s) would be an advantage

-         Availability to travel internationally as needed.

-         Ability to lead and motivate staff, while also being part of a larger international team
