Communications Manager

LOCATION: Washington, DC
DEPARTMENT: Marketing & Communications
REPORTS TO: Director, Strategic Communications and Marketing
DURATION: Full-time

Ocean Conservancy’s Marketing & Communications team strives to inform, inspire and empower the public to take action. We pride ourselves on reaching key constituencies in new and innovative ways, building Ocean Conservancy’s brand promise through strategic partnerships and working with our program teams to win real changes that protect and promote ocean health.

Primary Responsibilities:
The Communications Manager is responsible for generating national and regional media coverage and positioning Ocean Conservancy as the leading science-based, solution-oriented ocean conservation organization. The Communications Manager works with the rest of the Marketing & Communications team as well as other program teams to develop and convey consistent messages across communication channels.

Required Qualifications:

  • Degree in English, political science,  journalism, marketing or other relevant field
  • Five years experience in media relations, public relations, marketing and/or journalism; proven experience with media event planning
  • Superior written and oral communication skills, including capacity to communicate complex ideas compellingly to a variety of audiences
  • Strong grammar and editing skills
  • Knowledge of or experience with government and policy; experience with conservation issues a plus

  • A high-level performer with the ability to move rapidly in response to communications opportunities
  • Good relationship-builder capable of making and sustaining credible contacts
  • Experience and comfort pitching reporters and organizing media events on an aggressive schedule
  • Attention to details and adherence to deadlines and deliverables
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Personable, passionate, productive, and focused on advancing the cause of ocean conservation
  • Experience with government, non-profits, PR firms or cause-related marketing a plus
