Students looking to burnish their public relations, writing and journalism skills will find our Communications Department to be a fast-paced, high-energy place where they can learn about the environmental community and how The Wilderness Society works to protect the country’s most important public lands and natural resources.  Our interns roll up their sleeves to research critical environmental issues, craft press releases, author editorials and pitch both bloggers and traditional journalists.  The Wilderness Society offers communications interns hands-on opportunities to strategize with our regional policy and program staff, influence public opinion and protect America’s wild places.
 
Interns will be immersed in wilderness and energy policy from day one, and will be involved in:
 
Internship Responsibilities
  • Tracking and distribution of media clips for specific collaborative campaigns.
  • Assist in press release development and distribution, including drafting and editing press releases, op-eds, editorials, letters to the editor and related media memos.
  • Refining and developing press lists for TWS campaigns; including tracking reporters and building database lists.
  • Writing and editing content for The Wilderness Society’s website on policy and advocacy issues.
  • Utilizing a web based content management system to upload media related content to wilderness.org, including final news releases and pre-approved blog posts.
  • Using social media and online advocacy tools to reach members and supporters.
  • Performing rapid response and general administrative duties in support of communications campaigns or team needs.
  • Work on a semester-long project that will result in an end-of-semester product that can be used in student’s portfolio.
  • Perform general administrative duties in support of assigned project work.    
 
Minimum Requirements
  • Must be enrolled in an educational institution with courses leading to the attainment of a degree, certification, or diploma.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience with writing and editing for publication.
  • Demonstrated desire to learn about and work on public land issues.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.
  • Must be a team player and willing to work in a collaborative environment.
  • Willingness to adapt and remain flexible as projects and priorities change.
  • Self-motivated, passionate, and professional.
  • Most of all – willingness to have fun while producing great work!
Additional Details
  • Internships are unpaid but are available for college credit.
  • TWS will not provide any funding, benefits, or other fiscal compensation.
  • Internships are available on the following annual basis:
    • Spring (Jan - May)
    • Summer (Jun - Aug)
    • Fall (Sep - Dec)
