We are progressive environmental advocates who pull no punches and sometimes speak uncomfortable truths. This approach over four decades has yielded victories protecting our planet and its people. As part of Friends of the Earth International, we are a federation of grassroots groups working in 76 countries on today’s most urgent environmental and social issues. To accomplish our mission, Friends of the Earth is working at the nexus of environmental protection, economic policy, and social justice to fundamentally transform the way our country and the world value people and the environment. By focusing on reforming economic drivers such as tax or trade policy that are often used to empower corporations and governments to harm the environment, we have been able to make changes in the policies. Friends of the Earth U.S. (FOE) is fighting to champion the environment and create a more healthy and just world.

In this role as our Communications Director, you will report to the Managing Director and be part of our leadership team. You will supervise a staff of three who will assist in your responsibilities managing the website, media relations, publications, and fundraising communications. As you learn about our policies and programs, you will find, develop, and share the stories of our work, cultivating the relationships you need to place stories and to anticipate trends in environmental policy media coverage. Your ability to communicate complex subjects to multiple audiences will be vital to your success. Naturally, you will need to be adept with both story development and messaging.

You will be responsible for strategic and tactical management of an integrated, national campaign program designed to increase the public’s awareness and appreciation of environmental issues. Key elements of the job include: developing an integrated communications strategy designed to influence public opinion and achieve public policy and advocacy goals at the local, state, regional, and federal levels; executing effective, efficient plans to maximize the value of media placement resources; managing consultants and staff to implement new media and media placement efforts; and measuring and reporting results to staff, consultants, and program funders.

Working with our program managers, you will learn the intricacies of our work and which news stories are worthy of promotion. You will harness social media, know what reporters want to write about, and know the best outlet for a story.
