Description

Climate Geoengineering (CGE) is defined as deliberate, large-scale interventions in the Earth system to counteract climate change. There is increasing interest in CGE as the mitigation challenge of staying well below 2 degrees Celsius temperature rise—let alone 1.5 degrees—becomes more apparent. In the foreseeable future, governments or even non-state actors could turn to CGE options as a last resort or as means to buy time. Yet there is a considerable lack of understanding of the governance requirements of CGE. Furthermore, no comprehensive governance framework(s) exist for addressing CGE—technologies that fundamentally require multilateral governance approaches.

There is hence an urgent need for a broad, inclusive global governance discussions regarding the research, possible testing and deployment decision-making process for CGE technologies that have significant, long-term and planetary-wide consequences for this and future generations. The C2G2 Initiative will address these issues by seeking to enlarge, accelerate and shift the discussion on CGE governance from academia to the intergovernmental policy community through systematic engagement with government representatives, intergovernmental and international non-governmental organizations, as well as other non-state actors. C2G2 does not promote the use of geoengineering techniques, neither is it a prioriopposed to their consideration.

Reporting to, and under the supervision and guidance of the C2G2 Executive Director, and working closely with the Senior Strategy Director and Senior Programme Director, the incumbent will be responsible for creating, implementing and monitoring of an overall communications strategy for C2G2 directed toward intergovernmental organizations, governments, civil society, and non-state actors as well as the media and public audiences. The incumbent will work in a virtual team located in different areas of the world. She/he will also work closely with C2G2 partner organizations to ensure communications are well aligned and politically astute.

The successful candidate will have a passion for creating compelling communications strategies, products and messages that convey complex ideas in clear, accessible words and images; evidence a strong knowledge of climate change issues—including the political, scientific and governance dimensions; and be highly self-motivated as well as an excellent team player.

The incumbent will:

    • Create, implement and monitor a global, multi-media communications strategy to publicize the mission, activities and results of C2G2's work, demonstrating a careful understanding of the sensitivities involved in geoengineering governance, particularly with respect to global climate change politics. Development and implementation of this strategy includes website, extensive social media, podcast, film and print channels of communication.

    • Develop, write and oversee production of communications materials, including a website with regularly updated material, public announcements/summaries of event, media releases, and infographics and other visual information tools. Liaise closely with the C2G2 senior staff to ensure that written materials are consistent, clear and compelling; up-to-date key messages are incorporated into the outreach activities; and branding of the C2G2 Initiative is politically astute. Duties include proposing products; undertaking research; drafting and finalizing all text; and coordinating design approval, production, translation and distribution of materials, as needed. Incumbent will also work closely with key C2G2 partners on joint or adapted communication products that both organizations can use;

    • Undertake activities to promote media coverage of C2G2's work, including preparing media plans, initiating, organizing and overseeing media events, webinars, briefings, press conferences and interviews; initiating pro-active media outreach to relevant reporters; responding or channeling requests from media for information; and analyzing and reporting on the impact of media coverage;

    • Initiate and sustain professional relationships with key journalists who cover geoengineering, climate science and climate change issues; work closely with the Executive Director and Senior Strategy Director and Senior Programme Director to write messaging guidance and talking points for staff, Advisory Group members and other key stakeholders.;

    • Provide support to C2G2 colleagues by identifying communications and outreach opportunities; proposing and implementing agreed media and publicity initiatives; and working with colleagues to write and prepare articles, documents and presentations.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
