Description

The Conservation League is a nonprofit conservation organization that works with communities, elected officials, businesses, and citizen groups to protect the natural landscapes, abundant wildlife, clean air and water, and quality of life along the South Carolina coast.

Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Communications Director oversees the strategy and execution of traditional and digital communications to support the advocacy and fundraising goals of the organization.

This job requires leadership, strategic thinking, the ability to set and meet goals and deadlines, and the ability to prioritize and make progress on short- and long-term projects. It also requires relationships with media.

The Communications Director is a strong writer and editor with sound professional judgment and attention to detail. He/she is a team player who enjoys working in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment and managing diverse projects in an intense high-pressure setting.

He/she is opportunistic, nimble, energetic, creative, persistent, collaborative, and committed to both excellence and growth. The Communications Director is also hard-working, results-driven, and a fast and independent learner.

Responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and senior leadership to develop and implement an annual strategic communications plan that will increase programmatic and development impact for the organization.
  • Lead a team of communications professionals and manage consultants and vendors as necessary.
  • Maintain the integrity of the brand and identity of the Coastal Conservation League, including development and refinement of core messages to ensure organizational consistency.
  • Identify media and public policy issues that can be leveraged to support the Coastal Conservation League’s work. Create and implement communication approaches to build on ongoing issues, as well as breaking news, in order to achieve advocacy and fundraising goals.
  • Envision, create, and refine systems to develop and distribute ongoing content and messaging efforts, including the organization’s communication calendar.
  • Manage the organization’s website, action alerts, digital fundraising appeals, event programs and remarks, press releases, op-ed pieces, quarterly newsletter, and marketing communications.
  • Develop, innovate, and execute social media plans and campaigns and stay informed of latest digital engagement trends.
  • Cultivate relationships with key reporters, media and news outlets, and actively pitch stories and spokespeople.
  • Support the Executive Director, staff and Board members as media spokespersons, and actively work to build their leadership and profile.
  • Measure and track communications campaigns and share results and recommendations with key team members.

Key Qualifications:

  • Significant communications experience (at least 5-8 years) that includes a blend of political advocacy, digital engagement and fundraising, media relations, and branding.
  • Demonstrated excellence in both written and oral communication skills.
  • A strong track record of positioning an organization to achieve tangible outcomes in a competitive communications environment.
  • Experience acting as a media spokesperson and supporting senior staff and Board members to speak on behalf of the organization.
  • Proven ability to think ahead, prioritize, problem solve, focus, and manage multiple, complex projects in varying stages of development under time pressure with minimal supervision.
  • Skilled in using social media, technology, and innovative digital storytelling tools.
  • Experience using CRM systems.
  • Ability to develop and analyze digital metrics based on benchmarks and best practices for nonprofit organizations.
  • Understanding of high-priority local, state, and federal environmental issues and challenges, working knowledge of South Carolina state government and politics.
  • Strong collaboration, time management, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience managing internal teams and consultants/vendors.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends occasionally when necessary.
  • An unwavering commitment to the mission of the Coastal Conservation League.

This is a full-time position with benefits located in our Charleston, South Carolina office.
