Job Title: Communications Coordinator, Nuclear Campaign

Reports to: Climate and Energy Campaign Director

Location: Washington, D.C.

Summary:

Friends of the Earth is part of a federation of grassroots groups in 76 countries fighting for a more healthy and just world. Our top domestic campaign priorities include protecting the public from dangerous nuclear reactors, promoting environmentally responsible federal budget practices (including an end to taxpayer subsidies for polluters), and preventing the construction of an oil pipeline that would bring the world’s dirtiest oil from Canada to the United States.  We’re a principled and progressive organization known for speaking sometimes uncomfortable truths to power, and our campaigns demonstrate our belief that the fight for justice and the movement to protect the health of the planet are part of the same struggle.

We are looking for an experienced and dynamic Communications Coordinator to expand our organization’s communications capacity on anti-nuclear issues as a core component of our growing anti-nuclear campaign. The Communications Coordinator will generate media coverage, help mobilize e-activists, and produce a variety of communications materials and online content related to nuclear reactors and nuclear fuel cycle issues. S/he will be responsible for developing and implementing communications plans in consultation with the director of the Climate and Energy Campaign and the campaign’s nuclear campaigners and in collaboration with the rest of our communications team.

Major Responsibilities:

•In coordination with the director and campaigners, s/he will develop communications plans that advance key campaign objectives. These plans will include clear, achievable goals, target audiences, messages,  tactics and timelines.

•Generate media coverage that carries our message and helps us achieve campaign victories. (This includes developing media strategy, drafting press releases and editorials, building and updating media contact lists, building relationships with and pitching journalists, and tracking coverage.)

•Draft a variety of written communications content (including, but not limited to, news releases, blog posts and content for the website, e-mail action alerts, op-eds, letters to newspaper editors, memoranda, and magazine articles).

•Produce online and multimedia content including social media content, photography and videos.

•Attend and help with logistics and production of press conferences and other media/communications events.

•Fact check and edit others’ writing, with an eye to both style and content.

•Develop expertise on nuclear issues.

•Ensure all communications are consistent with our organization’s values and brand identity.

•Learn how to use and manage various technologies, including our website’s Content Management System (Drupal), Customer Relationship Manager (Salsa), and media contact database (Vocus).

•Attend regular communications, nuclear and energy/climate campaign meetings.

You Should Be:

•A college graduate or have equivalent experience.

•A fast, precise, and persuasive writer and editor.

•An experienced professional communicator, with a history of implementing successful strategies that include a variety of communications techniques.

•A consumer of traditional and new media.

•Politically savvy, with at least a basic knowledge of the federal legislative process, national politics, and environmental issues.

•An environmentalist, who cares deeply about the future of our planet and the people on it.  Experience and/or passion about nuclear issues a plus.

•Computer literate, and comfortable learning new programs and technologies.

•Someone who’s personable, enjoys working in teams, is professional, and has a sense of humor.

•Able to show proof of authorization to work in the U.S.

Salary and Benefits:

This position offers a competitive salary, commensurate with experience. Benefits package includes healthcare, paid vacation, sick leave, and an employee contribution-based retirement plan.
