PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Ocean Conservancy seeks a Communications Coordinator with one to three years’ experience to work with a highly motivated, entrepreneurial team of 12 that’s modernizing the organization’s communications strategies to increase the visibility of our experts, our work and our brand. We’d love to hear from you if you are a self-starter, quick learner and multi-skilled communicator who can generate new ideas and approaches while also implementing traditional communications strategies. The Communications Coordinator’s key responsibilities will be supporting the larger team’s efforts; assisting with the execution of strategic messaging and communications plans; researching news coverage, reporters and bloggers; coordinating press materials, social media posts and other online content for media relations; and cultivating new and traditional media attention ranging from regional to national and from print to broadcast to bloggers. A keen sense of newsworthiness, ability to thrive in a fast-paced team environment and interest in supporting the operations of the Marketing & Communications Department is desired.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Support Marketing & Communications team in strategic outreach, including writing and/or distributing messaging, statements, talking points, fact sheets, social media, blogs, photographs, multimedia and other press materials.
  • Coordinate with teams to perform regular outreach to journalists and numerous media channels, including assistance with a blogger and online media outreach strategy and responding to incoming media queries.
  • Build press lists, monitor media (print, broadcast, blogs, and social media) and assess media landscape to better inform our strategies.
  • Update Ocean Conservancy online press kits and help manage the News Room section of our website.
  • Participate in brainstorming and help execute creative, innovative approaches for Marketing & Communications.
  • Assist implementation of strategic communications plans designed to further conservation goals.
  • Serve as a team liaison to program, policy and science staff.
  • Help support our Marketing & Communications team and senior staff with other content development, production, research, logistical and administrative duties as needed. Participate fully across the team's disciplines by providing ideas for content, assisting with training and responding to internal questions about communications standards and guidelines. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Degree in English, political science, journalism, marketing communications or other relevant field. 
  • 1-3 years’ experience in communications – media relations, public relations, marketing, advertising and/or journalism. 
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including capacity to communicate complex ideas compellingly to a variety of audiences. Strong grammar, editing and story-telling skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability to be a high-level performer who can move rapidly in response to communications opportunities. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and function effectively as part of a team.
  • Good news judgment and experience pitching reporters and organizing media events on an aggressive schedule. 
  • Experience with social media techniques – particularly when it comes to reporter and blogger outreach. 
  • Familiarity with HTML, photography or multimedia editing/production a plus.
  • Experience with emerging issues in science, policy or conservation a plus.

  • Positive team player who is comfortable interacting with program, policy and science staff to evaluate needs and find solutions to raise the visibility of Ocean Conservancy and our work for a healthy ocean.
