Description

Project Seahorse is an international marine conservation team based out of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada.  We seek a communications co-ordinator to develop and implement a strategic communications plan.  This person will identify and promote Project Seahorse stories and achievements – and marine conservation in general - through a wide variety of outputs.  S/he will be also responsible for media relations and outreach, facilitating communications outside and within the team, producing popular articles, supporting technical writing, and ensuring that the website is an effective communications tool for international audiences.  This person will be a senior member of the Project Seahorse team, reporting to the Director, and will have some supervisory responsibilities.

The ideal Communications Co-ordinator will have qualifications and extensive experience in journalism, communications, public relations or marketing.  We seek superior writing, editing, and time management skills and a record of effective and rapid communication in conventional and electronic media.  Former experience as a journalist would be an asset.  We also seek a demonstrated capacity for strategic thinking, innovation, research, analysis, and project co-ordination.  Initiative and integrity are vital, as are a demonstrated interest in conservation and resource management and an ability to work to deadlines and manage a variety of projects concurrently. International experience is an advantage. (more details here...)

Please send the following to Christie Michailopoulos (christie@fisheries.ubc.ca): a cover letter, a curriculum vitae that indicates your outputs (with web links to them), three pieces of written work, and contact details for three references.  Also indicate your legal status for work in Canada, although all international candidates will be considered enthusiastically.

Deadline: 31st March 2009 or until the post is filled

This full-time position will initially be appointed for one year but funding is available for a further four years.  It will be based at the University of British Columbia, which provides excellent benefits for its employees.

UBC hires on the basis of merit and is committed to employment equity. We encourage all qualified persons to apply.
