Communications Associate

General position overview:
The Center for Biological Diversity seeks a hard-working, detail-oriented and organized self-starter for our communications team. This rapid-response position will support the Center’s communications and outreach to online supporters. The position is an opportunity to play a key role in supporting the Center’s endangered species protection work and promoting it to our growing network of 375,000 supporters and activists. The job requires excellent writing and attention to style; e-communication and organizational skills; proven computer skills; the ability to learn new programs and databases; management of short and long-term projects; and a motivated, creative personality that works well independently and in a team environment.

The Communications Associate will be managed by the Communications Director and work collaboratively with other staff.

Main duties:

  • Editing daily action alerts and emails to activists and supporters
  • Formatting, producing and distributing e-communications using online activism database
  • Formatting and distributing weekly Endangered Earth Online e-newsletter
  • Maintaining the e-activism calendar
  • Occasionally authoring written advocacy and breaking-news e-communications
  • Troubleshooting online and technical issues from supporters on our website or in our activism database
  • Tracking e-communication and campaign trends, suggesting improvements and changes
  • Providing technical back-up for the Center webmaster
  • Assisting communications staff with ongoing maintenance and updating of Web content

Essential qualities, qualifications and skills:

  • Minimum associate’s or bachelor’s degree
  • Two to four years’ work related to environmental activism, organizing, advocacy writing and/or communications
  • Exceptional written and verbal e-communications skills
  • Demonstrated editing and proofing skills
  • Strong strategic-planning skills
  • A demonstrated ability to work both independently and with a team
  • Anxcellent ability to balance multiple tasks and deadlines in a busy environment
  • A demonstrated personal interest in online communications, social networking and activism
  • A solid grasp of issues related to the Center’s endangered species work
  • Proven project-management experience with short- and long-term assignments, including the creation and implementation of advocacy campaigns, preferred
  • Customer service or public outreach experience, preferred
