General position overview:
The Center for Biological Diversity seeks a hard-working, detail-oriented and organized self-starter for our communications team. This rapid-response position supports the Center’s activism and fundraising to maintain loyal relationships with existing supporters. The position is an opportunity to play a key role in supporting and promoting the Center’s endangered species protection work to our growing network of 320,000 supporters and activists. The job requires excellent writing; e-communication and organizational skills; proven computer skills; the ability to learn new programs and databases; management of short- and long-term projects; and a motivated, creative personality that works well independently and in a team environment.

The Communications Associate will be managed by the Communications Director and work collaboratively with other communications, development and conservation staff.

Main duties:

  • Editing daily action alerts and emails to activists and supporters
  • Formatting, producing and distributing e-communications using online activism database
  • Authoring written advocacy, fundraising and breaking news e-communications
  • Troubleshooting online and technical issues from supporters on website or in activism database
  • Replying to supporters’ emails and questions related to online activism and Center’s conservation work
  • Processing supporter contact-info updates and preferences in activism database, as needed
  • Acting as liaison to membership staff and membership database
  • Tracking e-communication and campaign trends, suggesting improvements and changes
  • Providing technical back-up for Center webmaster
  • Assisting communications staff with ongoing maintenance and updating of Web content
  • Producing written and graphic products for use in online and off-line communications
  • Authoring and editing content for print and online newsletters, as needed

Essential qualities, qualifications and skills:

  • Minimum associate’s or bachelor’s degree
  • Two to four years’ work related to environmental activism, organizing, advocacy writing or communications
  • Exceptional written and verbal e-communications skills
  • Demonstrated editing and proofing skills
  • Strong strategic-planning skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and with a team
  • Excellent ability to balance multiple tasks and deadlines in a busy environment
  • Demonstrated personal interest in online communications, social networking and activism
  • Solid grasp of issues related to the Center’s endangered species work
  • Proven project-management experience with short- and long-term assignments, including creation and implementation of advocacy campaigns, preferred
  • Customer service or public outreach experience, preferred

Preferred technical skills:

  • Proficiency in desktop publishing programs (i.e. Adobe or Quark), image editing (Photoshop), Web editing (Dreamweaver) and social media
  • Familiarity with widgets, buttons and simple “share” and “like” coding for the most common social networking sites
  • Experience with Google Analytics or other common Web-traffic analytics
  • Knowledge of basic virus and malware troubleshooting
  • Ability to configure basic network, word processing, email and other software settings on computers in a simple Microsoft Windows domain
  • Experience with basic computer and telecommunications maintenance, including computer parts and peripherals replacement, hardware troubleshooting, wi-fi and ethernet troubleshooting
