Primary responsibilities for this role will include communication planning and executing outreach initiatives for the Advocacy, Development, the Center for Green Schools and Residential departments, which may include marketing project management. The ideal candidate will have solid strategic thinking and planning skills, insightful judgment, innovative problem-solving ability and be able to coordinate with diverse internal business partners. This individual must have exemplary communication and writing skills.

Specific Responsibilities Include

  • Establish strong relationships and strategic partnerships with various internal and external stakeholders
  • Write and edit for various communications channels and ensure quality (Web site, marketing materials, newsletters, press releases, articles and byliners)
  • Assist in strategizing and developing marketing and communications plans and PR campaigns and effectively communicate USGBC’s messages to varying audiences
  • Serve as an internal client contact and media contact
  • Proactively pitch and secure media placements and respond to reporter requests
  • Monitor media and industry trends daily
  • Conduct background research and develop key messages
  • Create and update media lists and research new media contacts
  • Assist in managing production of materials such as brochures, press releases, web copy, newsletters, presentations, ads, etc. (review marketing collateral and track deadlines and budgets)
  • Update news and information on USGBC.org and centerforgreenschools.org

Education and Training Requirements/Preferences

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in journalism, communications, English, public relations, business or related field preferred

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 1 year experience in a communications related field of work; minimum 2 years experience preferred

Other Skills and Qualifications

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills (knowledge of AP Style a plus)
  • Strong project management and organizational skills
  • Willingness and ability to take on unexpected challenges and tasks
  • Team player with outstanding interpersonal skills
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to anticipate issues and develop solutions
  • Experience with social media outreach
  • Competent in use of Excel, PowerPoint and Word
  • Knowledge of Vocus a plus
  • Knowledge and understanding of Web design and HTML a plus
  • Proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator a plus
  • Commitment to USGBC mission
