Position Title:  Communication Specialist, South-South Bamboo & Livelihoods Development Program  

INBAR Department:  Communication, South Asia Regional Office  

Reports to:  Director Communication & Outreach, Project Manager,  

Location:  New Delhi

Terms of Employment:  US$1,500-US$1,800/month (all inclusive)

 

If you are a highly-motivated and talented communication professional, capable of creating innovative communication products and services, INBAR would like to hear from you. To strengthen its communication team, based in the South  Asia Office in New Delhi, you will be responsible delivering the communications plan for the South-South Bamboo & Livelihoods Development Program and provide communication support to the South Asia Program and some INBAR global activities.

 

The International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR) is an inter-governmental development organization that promotes the benefits of bamboo and rattan globally to improve livelihoods, reduce poverty and protect the environment. With headquarters in Beijing, China and offices in India, Ethiopia, Ghana and Ecuador, INBAR has 40 member countries worldwide and links with partners in over 50 international, regional, and national organizations. 

 

The successful candidate will fulfil the following responsibilities:

Objective of this position: To implement marketing communication and knowledge sharing activities in support of the INBAR bamboo livelihoods program in India and East Africa

 

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Working as a member of the project and communication teams, primarily design and deliver a communication, knowledge sharing and information management plan in the project cycle, and execute other activities for South Asia and INBAR global needs.  
  • Create and deliver a range of communication products.
  • Support the project manager to capture and synthesize learning from the current and prior project phases into useful knowledge products that can be used in future stages of the project and by others lNBAR partners in other parts of the world.
  • Work closely with the project country teams and INBAR Leader of Evidence and Publishing to systematically capture materials for packaging as INBAR publications.
  • Produce and manage web materials for use on the INBAR website, including weekly activities on the website and social media.
  • Compile and manage a contacts list of current project stakeholders, potential future users of the project results and from different audience groups.
  • With the project manager and communications team, put in place metrics for tracking the reach and effectiveness of communication activities.
  • Feed into the INBAR global communication activities, participating as needed.  
  • Compile and interpret monthly web usage statistics as input to communication management and planning.

 

Education, Knowledge and Formal Education needed: University degree in journalism, marketing communication, business, science or a related field. 

 

Work experience and number of years of relevant experience needed

  • 3-5 years hands-on experience and a proven track record of delivering effective marketing communication activities preferably for a scientific, development organization or NGO.
  • Excellent skills and proven expertise in producing marketing communication products and services, including print, web, audio-visual, events, etc.
  • Solid experience in digital communication and marketing, preferably in a development or scientific context.
  • A strong team player with good sense of service delivery.

 

Complexity of thinking needed: Ability to plan and execute multiple communications activities simultaneously, setting and meeting deadlines; ability to write and edit high-quality communications content for web and print and summarize and synthesize scientific, technical and policy information into clearly written information suitable for different audiences; to produce publications that are web-enabled for wide distribution the internet. Effectively manage allocated budget.

Extent to which interpersonal skills are important for this job Interpersonal Skills: Contacts (Internal, External) Frequency, Nature & Purpose of Contacts:  A high-level of customer service orientation. Ability to deal effectively with internal customers (programs staff and scientists in various locations worldwide), and with a network of external partners and suppliers.  

Language requirements: Fluent written and spoken English, other languages are an asset.

Information technology skills: Excellent command of Microsoft office tools, especially Word, Excel and Powerpoint. Experience with web content management systems and use of social media. Some knowledge of layout programs and basic audio-visual editing will be an advantage as is practical experience with photography and videography.

Authority to make decisions, extent of supervision and support available: Will be expected to work independently and efficiently with a minimum of supervision, and as an active member of both the communications and project  teams.

Impact of the role, positive impact and the impact of errors (contribution to team and organization): The frequent and timely creation and delivery of the project’s communication materials is critical to the success and to INBAR’s credibility. Low quality products, lack of timely delivery of errors reduce the impact of the project and reflect badly in the organization as a whole.

Budget targets, management of physical assets

Manages project budgets allocated for marketing communication in agreement with the Project Manager and communications Director. Is encouraged to work with team members on developing funding opportunities for INBAR communications work.
