In 2011, the Commonwealth Government announced the Regional Natural Resources Management Planning for the Climate Change Fund. Regional Natural Resource Management (NRM) organisations will be supported to update existing regional NRM plans to guide planning for climate change impacts on the land and to maximise the environmental benefits of carbon farming projects. The Program will entail extensive and ongoing engagement with representatives from the NRM regions to ensure that the products and the manner in which they are delivered meet NRM needs.

CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research are seeking to appoint an experienced and enthusiastic science communicator who will develop and implement a communication and outreach strategy for the Program.

Specifically you will:

  • Communicate to stakeholders in Australia the research findings and applications of a DCCEE-CSIRO program to produce climate change projections for Australia’s NRM regions.
  • Work closely with scientists and stakeholders to develop a range of communication materials including a sophisticated web portal; a detailed, peer-reviewed technical report; brochures, fact sheets, and articles.
  • Develop and implement a communication strategy for the Program.
  • Research, write and publish information about the Program findings and the research being undertaken and its applications using various channels e.g. brochures, publications, web and new media.
  • Organise, and participate in, presentations, events and briefings throughout Australia.
  • Provide communication advice and support to researchers.

Location: Aspendale, VIC, although other locations may be considered

Salary: $75K to $85K plus up to 15.4% Superannuation

To be successful you will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in communication, public relations, media, or science.
  • Demonstrated experience in media relations, pulic reliations, government affairs or communication.
  • High level of written and oral communication skills including proven experience in the development of communication strategies and the capacity to write effectively about science for a range of audiences and media.
  • Proven experience in the development and dissemination of media stories, speeches, publications, social media, material for the web, video and other communications.
  • High level planing and organisational skills and the ability to work on a range of tasks and achieve deadlines.
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong networks and relationships with colleagues, management and key stakeholders and a demonstrated ability to work effectively in teams and across boundaries.
