PositionSummary:

The Coffee Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) Specialist will be responsible for carrying out M&E activities under a new multi-country Sustainable Agriculture project. This project has two primary aims: 1) to build farmer knowledge and capacity, instilling good agricultural practices based on the Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN) Standards that protect ecosystems and improve quality of life for families and their communities; and 2) develop a knowledge base of key development priorities and challenges for client communities in order to identify strategies to help address them. The Coffee M&E Specialist supports both of these aims by working with project staff and corporate collaborators to build sound M&E systems that improve
understanding of the local context and track results of interventions over time. This includes collaborating with stakeholders and other Rainforest Alliance staff to design, implement, and evaluate project activities; training technical staff, supply chain partners, and field consultants on M&E methods and tools; ensuring proper data collection, quality control, analysis,
and management; and reporting on key findings. The position will provide support to Rainforest Alliance’s Sustainable Agriculture Division, and its corporate partners, on field-based M&E activities, with 100% time devoted to the Nescafé Plan project in the first year. S/he will also coordinate closely with other Rainforest Alliance units in markets and communications.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and manage field-based project monitoring & evaluation  plans in coordination with Rainforest Alliance’s Senior Managers, Corporate Sustainability Assessment and Global M&E, other Evaluation & Research (E&R) team members, Sustainable Agriculture and corporate collaborators’ technical field staff;
  • Facilitate context assessments in priority countries to understand needs, gaps, and opportunities for achieving rural development outcomes in the context of business and local community needs;
  • Design and provide virtual and in-country training to staff, corporate partners and field consultants on M&E and context assessment methods and tools;
  • Conduct field-based studies and supervise assessment teams as necessary;
  • Implement and take responsibility for quality control procedures to ensure the collection, management, analysis and reporting of high quality data; 
  • Identify M&E partner organizations, such as local universities or research institutions as appropriate;
  • Support Nescafé in the design and rollout of the data management and reporting platform in line with Rainforest Alliance's mission and values;
  • Contribute to and/or finalize and deliver quality reports and presentations to project staff, partners, funders, and other Rainforest Alliance Programs in timely manner;
  • Manage relationships with program field staff and stakeholders as related to project/program design & M&E;
  • Work closely with the Senior Manager for Global M&E to embed RA’s Global Indicator Framework and M&E best practices into sustainable coffee projects;   
  • Coordinate with and provide regular updates to E&R and Sustainable Agriculture Senior Managers and staff as required;
  • Contribute to other Evaluation and Research initiatives as necessary, providing valuable input and lessons learned from field implementation;
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  • Degree in International Development, Agriculture, Social Sciences, Economics, Natural Resources Management or related field; Advanced degree preferred;
  • 7 years’ experience, minimum of 2 years’ experience conducting monitoring and evaluation activities, impact assessments of programs and projects and/or related studies, preferably related to sustainable livelihoods
    development, sustainable agricultural, supply chain management, and/or community engagement;
  • Fluency in English required; fluency in another language (Spanish, French, Bahasa Indonesia, Mandarin, Vietnamese) strongly preferred;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement cost-effective performance-based monitoring plans;
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices and methodologies of project monitoring and evaluation;
  • Knowledge and skills facilitating project and programmatic theories of change/results chains;
  • Demonstrated ability to build capacity for M&E among project staff and partners;
  • Excellent research, analytical and report writing skills; 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Proficiency in information management, ICT, and GIS, specifically as they relate to agricultural technical assistance, a distinct advantage;
  • Knowledge of statistics and evidence of applying statistical analyses to opportunistic data collected in real world situations a plus;
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Ability to be results-oriented and multi-task as well as motivate field staff and teams to manage diverse and time-sensitive activities while delivering quality results;
  • Ability to communicate effectively to articulate and demystify complex M&E concepts to less technical staff, project stakeholders and corporate partners; and
  • Ability to travel internationally at least 50% of the time
