Bird Studies Canada (BSC) - Atlantic Region is seeking a motivated and skilled field biologist to coordinate and lead Nova Scotia coastal surveys for breeding birds for the Maritimes Breeding Bird Atlas. The Atlas is a five-year field project to determine the distribution and abundance of all bird species breeding in the Maritimes. For more information, visit www.mba-aom.ca.
   The Coastal Survey Coordinator will manage a project to survey Nova Scotia's coastal islands and remote coastlines for breeding seabirds as well as landbirds and other bird species, and will be responsible for all aspects of the project including scheduling coastal surveys, coordinating travel and other logistics related to travel (e.g., chartering boats), and managing staff and volunteers involved in the surveys. This position will start on May 3, 2010 and continue to July 30, 2010.

Candidates should demonstrate the following skills/experience:

  • Identifying and surveying birds (all types, but especially seabirds and coastal landbirds);
  • Boating experience, particularly marine, including basic safety and/or operator proficiency certification for small non-pleasure craft;
  • Managing staff and volunteers;
  • Coordinating field projects including budget, logistics, and staff;
  • Working with little to no supervision;
  • Working in a team environment.
  • Candidates must be comfortable working long days starting early in the morning, legally entitled to work in Canada and have a valid driver's license.

Asset qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Nova Scotia coast and coastal islands;
  • First aid training (note the successful candidate must obtain certification prior to project start);
  • Navigation in remote areas with map, compass, GPS;
  • Remote tent-camping experience.

Salary: $2600-$3000/month (commensurate with experience)
