Through the GLOBE (Growing Leaders on Behalf of the Environment) internship program, The Nature Conservancy hires students and recent college graduates to fill paid internship positions during a 10-week summer internship. This is a unique opportunity for students and recent graduates to bridge the gap between what is learned in the classroom and on-the-ground work in the world of conservation. Additionally, the GLOBE program provides interns with the chance to directly work toward a sustainable future for our planet on the side of the Conservancy, the world’s largest environmental organization.

We are seeking a Coastal Restoration GLOBE Intern to work out of our Rhode Island Field Office. The position will involve working under the supervision of a project manager and outside research collaborators on coastal restoration and ecological assessment projects. Job duties will include assisting with oyster shellfish and living shoreline restoration, performing long-term monitoring of restoration sites, as well as a wide variety of other ecological studies depending on the individual’s skill set. Occasionally work in inclement weather, weekends and evenings will be required.

• Manage assigned coastal restoration projects.
• Provide programmatic and project management support.
• Conduct field surveys and routine monitoring of restoration sites.
• Provide volunteer training and participate in public outreach activities.
• Assist with preparation and execution of technical reports.

• Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, preferably in one or more of the following sub-disciplines: marine science, fisheries ecology, or related field with emphasis in quantitative analysis.
• Experience in Microsoft Office Suite, GIS, Adobe and other basic computer applications.
• Working knowledge of statistics and statistical software (R, SAS, JMP, or PRIMER).
• Experience operating and porting aquatic research vessels.
• Experience wading, swimming, and/or snorkeling.
• Experience working in mid-Atlantic nearshore, coastal-marine systems.

• This is a full-time, temporary internship position with a position term of June 1, 2014 - August 8, 2014.

Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT

The Coastal Restoration Globe Intern may work in variable weather conditions under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions may require:

• Minor physical exertion and/or muscular strain.
• Work from aquatic vessels (motorized boat, canoe, or kayak).
• Wading or swimming in cold and/or turbid water.

Intern Selection Process

• 2-3 phone interviews will be conducted for applicants selected to interview
