Description

Location: London and Kent. The internship will be based predominantly in Kent, with time spent in the offices of partner organisations across Kent and London where this can be done in line with COVID-19 procedures. An agile working policy will be adopted, where staff can work from home, office or other agreed remote location, where reasonable.

The opportunity: The Coast Explorer Internship Programme will offer a unique opportunity to candidates who are passionate and enthusiastic about the marine environment. The Coast Explorer intern will gain skills, knowledge and experience across a variety of sectors in the marine environment, to help direct and shape their future career ambitions.

This internship programme is funded by The Crown Estate and project managed by Kent Wildlife Trust. The programme is run in partnership with The Crown Estate, the Kent Wildlife Trust, Vattenfall and Canterbury City Council (the partner organisations); offering experience and a balanced view on a career in the marine environment and how different sectors can work together.

The successful intern will follow a varied schedule whilst on the programme, that will allow them to gain invaluable and relevant experience working for a range of stakeholders, in a variety of settings. Experiences include: working with a variety of teams across different sectors; writing for different audiences; working with local communities to raise awareness about environmental issues; undertaking surveys; the use of social media in the workplace; stakeholder engagement; creating virtual educational outreach materials; understanding local environmental issues such as Invasive and Non-Native Species; and participating in online meetings, training and webinars.

The intern will also get the chance to undertake an independent research project, looking in to the sustainable alternatives to material and fuel use at offshore wind farms. This will involve working remotely with different teams (from engineering, to environmental and concept) across the partner organisations.

We are looking for: An intern who can build on their existing skills and knowledge to make the most out of this unique experience. We are looking for candidates who are passionate and enthusiastic about the marine environment and have a willingness to learn. Applicants should have a good understanding of current marine issues and sea users, and some experience of working or volunteering within a relevant sector. Due to current COVID-19 working restrictions, we are looking for someone who is self-motivated and able to manage their own workload, with the ability to work independently, as well as within a remote team.  Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) will be essential and applicants should have the ability to build strong working relationships and to engage with people at all levels.

How to apply:

To apply, please visit our website: www.kentwildlifetrust.org.uk.  You will need to:

  • Submit your completed Applicant Information Form.
  • Submit a CV and covering letter outlining your interest in the internship, relevant skills and experience.
  • As a separate document, in less than 1,000 words, answer the following questions:

1. What do you hope to gain from taking part in this internship?

2. How do your experience, knowledge and skills make you a suitable candidate for this internship?

3. Why do you think it is important to consider multiple users and uses of marine and coastal environments?

Interviews: Interviews will take place on 17th and 18th March 2021. We will endeavour to hold the interviews in person where possible, taking into account social distancing and relevant COVID-19 procedures. Where this is not possible, or the candidate is unable to interview in person, we will conduct interviews over Zoom. The interviews will consist of a series of competency based questions and a short presentation.
