Position Title: Climate Vulnerability Assessment Expert
INBAR Department:  Global Programme
Reports to: Project Manager
Location: Beijing, duty travel to Chishui municipality as required
Terms of Employment:  up to 15 days, between 1 June and 31 December 2015; RMB 2,000 per day

 

The International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR) is an inter-governmental development organization committed to reducing poverty and protecting the environment through the use of bamboo and rattan. With headquarters in Beijing, China and offices in India, Ethiopia, Ghana and Ecuador, INBAR has 40 member countries worldwide and has links with partners in over 50 international, regional, and national organizations.

INBAR is currently seeking a Climate Vulnerability Assessment Expert for the project “Bamboo for climate-smart landscapes in Chishui Municipal, Guizhou Province”. The project, funded by the Swiss Embassy in China and implemented by INBAR and Chishui forestry bureau, aims to increase bamboo forest productivity and resilience for local communities to adapt to climate change through the introduction and demonstration of climate-smart landscape management practical techniques in Chishui region, Guizhou province.

 

The successful candidate will:

  • Assess the vulnerability and risks faced by the Chishui communities in the context of climate change, in order to identify possible solutions to address these issues, which will enhance the resilience of local communities to adapt to climate change.
  • Conduct desk research with field survey, conduct data analysis
  • Produce a technical report on vulnerability assessment to adapt to Climate change in English with Chinese summary.

 

Outputs, Deliverables / Reporting Requirements:

  • A vulnerability assessment report of Chishui to climate change – which should outline risks and threats to the local ecosystem to climate change, as well as entry points where bamboo can potentially play a positive role in helping communities adapt to climate change. The vulnerability study will also incorporate a baseline of target beneficiaries income and the current productivity of their bamboo resources. It is expected to become a useful tool for possible assessments of other areas in China and other INBAR member countries worldwide.
  • The vulnerability assessment report should be submitted to the Project Manager 4 weeks after completion of the field survey.

Qualifications:

  • At least three years’ experience of Climate change adaption and vulnerability assessment, especially on forest ecosystem vulnerability assessment;
  • Post Graduate Degree in Forestry ecology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
  • Proven track-record of delivering similar high-quality consultancies/studies
  • Fluent Mandarin and a good command of English, especially written.
