Digital Agricultural, informed by climate information, is revolutionising farming. The candidate will work with a dynamic team providing innovative solutions to improve access and use of climate information to support agricultural decisions, helping keep Australian farmers at the leading edge, and supporting farmers in developing countries.  The work will include effective integration of climate information into a range of agricultural systems models and exploration of the forecast skill in terms of agricultural metrics (e.g. yield/liveweight benefits, farm scale profitability, value at risk etc.). The successful candidate will also possess a sound understanding of climate data and be able to diagnose the meteorological causes of low forecast skill in farming system applications, as well as, possess data programming and manipulation skills that can ensure continuous high-quality climate data via methods infilling, bias correction and possibly downscaling.  The candidate will work with a team making a difference to Australian and global agriculture.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Incorporate novel approaches to scientific investigations by adapting and/or developing original concepts and ideas for new, existing and further research.
  • Incorporate climate and weather related data into a series of agricultural systems models in order to measure forecast skill, climate change impacts or climate smart agricultural practices.
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of CSIRO’s reputation.
  • Produce high quality scientific papers suitable for publication in quality journals and for presentation at national and international conferences.
  • Work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, often regionally dispersed research team, to undertake independent scientific investigations and carry out associated tasks under the guidance of more senior Research Scientists.

Location:      Canberra or Hobart

Salary:          $92K - $100K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful you will need:

  • A doctorate and/or equivalent research experience in a relevant discipline area, such as Agricultural Systems Science, Climatology, Meteorology or Applied Computing;
  • Demonstrated ability to innovatively design and apply software solutions to integrate, manipulate and analyse large climatic data sets with exisiting farming systems models e.g. APSIM, AUSfarm etc.
  • Experience engaging with stakeholders to understand differing approaches to decision making and risk management and developing tools to aid these.
  • Experience in working within high performing, multi-disciplinary teams and projects.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, and carry out independent individual research, to achieve organisational goals.
