Climate Scientist

Climate & Energy Program
Washington, DC Office

The Washington, DC based Climate Scientist will carry out research and analysis,
outreach, and media activities in support of the Climate and Energy Program.
In particular, this position will serve as a resource to the UCS media team
by providing robust, timely, accessible, and policy-relevant information
on climate science with an emphasis on impacts and adaptation.

Climate Communications: Research, review, and help develop UCS materials
to advance greater public awareness/understanding of climate change science,
impacts, adaptation, and policies aimed at climate-relevant solutions. Help
ensure products maintain high quality and are informed by climate science.

Climate Impacts Project Work: Help develop factsheets, reports, and other
science-based products that analyze, explain, and/or interpret evidence
of climate change influencing weather patterns, sea level rise, shrinking
ice, etc. Serve as advisor or resource on research, web, or outreach projects
led by other project leaders. Supervise science consultants as needed.

Policy Rapid Response: Prepare for media requests with short deadlines.
Research, review, or help facilitate accurate science content of op-eds,
letters to the editor, expert testimony, congressional briefing materials,
draft legislation, and engagement of external experts to work with the Climate
and Energy Program policy staff.

Expert Engagement: Maintain close working relationships with science colleagues,
including through participation in scientific conferences and policy-relevant
research collaborations. Work with the outreach team to strategically engage
with specific experts in the UCS science network.

Work requires a strong background in climate change science and impacts
and three to five years of relevant experience, with two or more years of
comparable work experience. Involvement in communicating science to a wide
variety of audiences, especially the media, is highly desirable. Experience
ensuring climate science is relevant to public policy is a plus. Strong
communication and teamwork skills are essential. Current research collaborations
and other successful expert engagement within the scientific community is
important. PhD in relevant field is required.

May spend extended periods at computer terminal. Occasional travel (10-15%
of time) to events, conferences, and other UCS offices will be required.

Compensation, Hours and Location: This is a full-time position based in
UCS’s Washington, DC office. For candidates who meet all position requirements,
the salary is in the high $60s or commensurate with experience. UCS offers
