Location: Applicant has option of CA, MA or DC Office

The Union of Concerned Scientists is a nationally prominent science-based nonprofit working on issues we believe to be the greatest environmental and security threats of our time. UCS combines rigorous scientific analysis with innovative thinking and effective citizen advocacy to achieve practical solutions. We strive for a future that is free from the threats of global warming and nuclear war and a planet that supports a rich diversity of life. Our specific focus areas include climate change, renewable energy, advanced vehicle technology, nuclear power safety, nuclear weapons and related security issues, preserving the integrity of science, and sustainable agriculture.

The Position:
The Climate Scientist will help lead UCS’s efforts to provide the US public and policymakers with robust, timely, accessible and policy-relevant information on climate science. Provide expert technical and analytical advice to campaigns where needed. Carry out related research, outreach, and media activities.  Provide project management and staff supervision when needed.

Responsibilities:
• Develop, review and ensure high quality of UCS materials on climate science, including but not limited to press releases, web pages, science briefs, draft legislation, expert testimony, and public presentations.

• At times serve as project leader who guides the research design, external expert collaborator engagement, and works with key staff on the media and outreach aspects of major reports.
• Serve as an advisor or resource on research and outreach projects led by other project leaders.
• Supervise consultants or staff, as appropriate.
• Serve as a resource for media and outreach within the organization. A small percentage of time will support foundation and fundraising efforts including answering member and donor scientific questions.
• Maintain close working relationships with academic colleagues, including through participation in scientific conferences and policy-relevant research collaborations.
• Provide support for the other UCS offices which may need periodic climate science review or input.
• Stay up to date on the latest climate-relevant publications, reports and science developments including and beyond your area of specialization.
• Work in close coordination with the other scientists in the organization including the Assistant Director of Climate Research and Analysis and the Director of Science and Policy and Chief Scientist.

Qualifications:
Requires an in-depth knowledge of climate science and impacts, acquired through completion of a doctoral program in a relevant field, and demonstrable ability to understand the public policy aspects of climate change and the role of technical analyses and advocacy in informing public opinion and policy debates. Strong public speaking skills, a demonstrable ability to write for non-technical audiences and the ability to work both independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team is also required.

Experience:
Position requires a background in climate change science and impacts and at least 2-4 years of relevant work experience, including the application of climate science to public policy and experience in communicating science to a wide variety of audiences. Extensive experience managing scientific and technical groups and supervising research staff is a distinct advantage.  National and international experience and existing relationships in the climate science and climate policy communities is desirable.  Formal education can be from a range of areas of specialization relevant to the broad scope of climate change science, impacts and sustainable paths forward.
