The Climate Preparedness Project Associate will play a vital role in research, analysis and synthesis as part of UCS’s Climate Preparedness Team, and in support of a broader suite of climate activities.  The Project Associate would be responsible for working independently and as part of a team to advance one or more climate preparedness analytical projects.

This is a full-time, nine-month temporary position.

Responsibilities

  • Project research and analytics: The project associate would play a central role in one or more research/analytical projects, carrying out or assisting with a range of activities. Examples include: Identifying, processing and synthesizing climate risk data and information for specific states, regions, cities, long-standing communities, and infrastructure (e.g., military bases); identifying policies that are “maladaptive” to climate change and actually enhance or perpetuate risk, and researching adaptive policy alternatives; conducting place-based research and interviews to build case studies and establish local narratives of climate change and its impacts; participating in report writing.
  • Expert and stakeholder engagement: the project associate will assist with engagement of relevant experts and stakeholders for their input to project methodologies, review of project results, etc.
  • Rapid response:The project associate will assist UCS staff with rapid response to media and other requests.
  • Project administration: The project associate will undertake certain project administration and management activities.  
  • General Climate Campaign analytical support:The project associate may be called on to assist with technical/analytical support to the Climate Campaign more broadly, including research and support to public-facing products, like web pages, fact sheets, and infographics.

Qualifications and experience

Two to four years relevant experience required; an MS degree or BS with additional experience is preferred.  The ideal candidate will have a high level of competency in climate or natural sciences, as well as within relevant social sciences.  The position requires solid understanding of climate change adaptation and resilience, including of the current policy arena.  Strong quantitative and analytical skills are essential, including a clear track record of relevant research, analysis and synthesis. Exceptional oral/written communication skills, including the ability to translate scientific information into language understandable by policymakers and public audiences, are required.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member, skills and experience with expert engagement, and a high degree of comfort with project administration and management activities. Proficiency in personal computer applications, including spreadsheet, word processing, and basic programming is necessary. Advanced skills in using Microsoft Excel to process and analyze large datasets are a plus.

Compensation, Hours and Location: This is a full-time, benefits-eligible nine-month position based in UCS’s Washington DC office. For candidates who meet all position requirements, the salary would be in the low $40,000s, annualized. UCS offers excellent benefits and a rewarding work environment.
