POSITION SUMMARY

Conservation International (CI) believes that harnessing the immediate potential of natural climate solutions (NCS)–mitigation and adaptation opportunities that come from forests, land use, and other key ecosystems–is essential to addressing global climate change.

The Senior Manager for Climate Policy will advance CI’s goals to promote the development and implementation of NCS within global and national policies. They will support CI’s climate policy priorities related to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) through tracking relevant negotiations, consulting with partners and governments, and developing policy analyses. They will also lead efforts with CI country programs and external partners to integrate nature into climate action as part of their nationally determined contributions (NDCs).

The Senior Manager position will report to the Senior Director for Climate Policy. The Senior Manager will liaise across CI divisions to ensure progress on the policy components of CI’s Climate Strategy. They will also support Global Policy and Government Affairs planning, strategy development and budget processes, and funding proposal development for climate policy work.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support collaboration with external partners to create shared policy guidance for national governments to integrate nature into nationally determined contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.
  • Manage cross-CI strategy for engaging with countries to integrate natural climate solutions in NDC planning and implementation, including, but not limited to, preparing policy analyses and tools.
  • Provide specialized technical support to CI field programs to ensure project alignment with the Paris Agreement, specifically related to NDCs.
  • Contribute to CI’s preparation for and engagement at UNFCCC negotiations, including cross-divisional climate policy coordination, CI delegation management, event organization, and negotiations tracking.
  • Advance the achievement of the policy elements of CI’s Climate Strategy by supporting cross-divisional activities under the climate policy category.
  • Plan and track programmatic activities to comply with international donor requirements and reporting.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • This position is based in the Arlington, VA office.
  • Position requires up to 25% domestic and international travel.
  • This is a fast-paced work environment that may require evening work for phone calls with CI programs in other time zones.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in conservation science, climate, international policy, or development-related field.
  • At least 6 years of specialized professional experience in topics related to international climate policy.
  • Specialized knowledge of current negotiations under major climate policy fora and existing network of contacts.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written and oral communication skills.
  • Proven ability to form collaborative working relationships with multiple groups internal and external to the organization.
  • Comfortable working across cultures.
  • Experience in professionally and diplomatically interacting with government delegates and other high-level partners.
  • Ability to understand complex, technical issues concerning conservation science, international development policy, and the politics surrounding multilateral institutions that are critical to CI’s success.
  • Highly independent worker able to assess a situation, make the necessary decisions and execute them for multiple lines of work and deadlines.
  • Ability to coordinate and work effectively as a member of a team.
  • Ability to facilitate group meetings in person and remotely.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Authorized to work in the USA.

Preferred

  • Master’s degree in conservation science, climate, international policy or finance, or development-related field.
  • Fluency in Spanish, French or Portuguese.
  • Established relationships in the climate change community.
  • Professional or academic experience in international policy analysis and design, and knowledge and understanding of complex multilateral institutions.
  • Experience living and working abroad.
