Description

ABOUT THE POSITION:

The Climate Policy Campaigner will be responsible for guiding the interventions of a large alliance in the climate policy process. The processes of primary concern are the UNFCCC treaty negotiation process, the Clean Development Mechanism, and other funding sources such as a Green Climate Fund or Global Methane Fund.

The Campaigner will be responsible for tracking policy developments and reporting these back to GAIA staff and allies; developing intervention strategies to achieve the alliance’s strategic goals within the policy sphere; representing the larger alliance within negotiating spaces and in front of the press; and coordinating interventions and actions of the alliance within the policy negotiations.

This is a new position, and the international policy scene is changing rapidly, so the exact profile will evolve over time.

LOCATION:

As a global network, GAIA has some flexibility about the location of its staff. However, the policy campaigner should preferably be based in Europe, in proximity to Bonn, Brussels and Geneva.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1) Track developments around climate finance, CDM, and other policy initiatives (inside or outside the UNFCCC process) which will affect wastepickers and waste management, and communicate these developments to represents of the Alliance.

2) In consultation with GAIA members, wastepicker groups and allies, craft (and continuously amend) strategies to achieve the Alliance’s strategic goals in the policy sphere (namely, funding for wastepickers to increase recycling/composting; and an end to subsidies for waste disposal technologies).

3) When necessary, represent the Alliance in front of governments, other NGOs, the media etc. Work to open up spaces for wastepicker leaders to directly represent themselves and their concerns.

4) Coordinate and facilitate Alliance interventions, particularly around large meetings (e.g., COPs).

5) Conduct a visibility campaign on behalf of the Alliance, aimed at European development agencies and decision-makers, to introduce recyclers as a climate solution.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1) Familiarity with the climate negotiation process, climate science and climate policy.

2) Excellent communication skills, oral and written.

3) Experience and ability to manage complex organizational and political relationships.

4) Good knowledge of international climate policy.

5) Affinity and experience working with mass-based movements in the global South.

6) Good team player with demonstrated capacity for managing independent work, and coordinating with GAIA’s multicultural team over email.

7) Proven ability to maintain work relationships and work collaboratively over long distances (via email, skype, etc.)

8) Willing to do considerable international travel and own administrative work.

9) Dedication to social and environmental justice.

10) Fluency in a second language desirable, particularly Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese or Marathi.
