Climate Policy Analysis and Modelling (ref. pi/01, 1 or 2 years)
The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) offers the following post-doctoral position:
Background: The successful candidate will hold a PhD, ideally in economics, and have a profound knowledge of climate policy, in particular with regard to the international negotiations and EU climate policy. A PhD in a different field (e.g. political science, engineering, etc.) would be acceptable if a sufficient knowledge of economics can be demonstrated.
Research task: The set of tasks associated with this position includes
- high-quality research and economic analysis of current issues in climate policy, to be published in international journals in the field of economics and policy analysis
- keeping track of developments in international, European, and domestic climate and energy policy, e.g. by following the scientific and grey literature, and by attending conferences and events
- adding policy realism and policy relevance to the theoretical economic studies of the Policy Instruments working group
- coordination of the flagship activity Climate Policies, i.e. synthesis and dissemination of the department’s research results on climate policy
Required skills:
- Ability to contribute to quantitative and theoretical economic analysis, in cooperation with other researchers. Familiarity with formal analysis and quantitative modeling is therefore a strong advantage
- Capacity to prepare policy assessments and economic institutional studies in the area of climate policy, e.g. on options for extending the EU ETS or on new proposals for an international mitigation fund
The preferred starting date for this position is 1 March or 1 April 2012. The successful candidate will become member of the working group ‘Policy Instruments Modelling’. This group is part of PIK’s Research Domain ‘Sustainable Solutions’ and headed by Prof. Dr. Ottmar Edenhofer, who also serves as IPCC Co-chair of Working Group III on the Mitigation of Climate Change.

Salary and benefits are according to a public service position in Germany (E13 TV-L).
