POSITION SUMMARY
 

The Applied Scientist III (ICR) provides technical and scientific support and leadership as a subject matter resource (SMR) for conservation initiatives related to climate change, other conservation activities and measures of conservation success (MOS). This person will take a lead role in using climate change data to support decisions and the development of strategies in areas such as water, agriculture, and energy provision. The role will also support cutting-edge applied research on climate change impacts and adaptation related to nature and people.  This is an opportunity to work internationally with leading scientists and organizations in search of solutions to major environmental and social challenges.

 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 

The Applied Scientist III (ICR) conducts research and advises conservation teams under the guidance of a relevant Lead Scientist.  S/he may lead a program or project relative to climate change.  S/he collaborates with other scientists and institutions to enhance Conservancy practices.

 
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
 
  • Supports program objectives by working in a complex matrix organization environment.             
  • May participate and/or lead a cross functional team.                          
  • May manage a grant, contract or write a request for proposal.
  • Must maintain scientific credibility through peer reviewed publications, research and communication.         
  • Interprets guidelines, evaluates information and modifies processes to adapt to changing circumstances for the program.
  • Provides a variety of information to staff and others, contributing to conservation projects and ensuring workflow.                                    
  • May provide training for internal and external colleagues on ecological and conservation scientific principles.
  • Must work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
  • Master's Degree in science related field and 4 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience manipulating, analyzing and interpreting statistical or environmental data.
  • Record of peer reviewed publications in scientific journals.                         
  • Experience fundraising and/or writing grants and research proposals.                       
  • Experience leading or participating on cross functional teams.                                       
  • Experience managing complex projects including the financial aspect and coordinating the work of peers and partners.
  • Experience working and communicating with a wide range of people.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • PhD and 1-3 experience considered.
  • Strong knowledge of climate modelling.
  • Experience linking state of the art climate models to environmental changes.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Training experience.
  • Professional network in climate science.
