The Climate Change Research Assistant will work with a multi-disciplinary team of individuals to help develop and communicate climate change adaptation strategies for the Great Lakes region.  S/he will play an important role in developing and delivering material for web-based seminars and in-person workshops for Nature Conservancy staff, partners, and stakeholders engaged in creating new adaptation strategies, and/or in revising current conservation or management approaches to incorporate climate change.   S/he will also help with the organization and planning of these web-based seminars and workshops, and will be responsible for many aspects of workshop logistics.  S/he helps to collect relevant information on climate change impacts and adaptation strategies, and to maintain a searchable literature database.   The Research Assistant will help develop climate change adaptation case studies for several focal conservation projects (e.g., for forest systems managed for sustainable use, for freshwater ecosystems in agricultural landscapes, etc.). The Research Assistant should have a strong interest in communicating science to a range of different audiences, and in working with diverse groups of people to develop collaborative approaches to helping people and nature adapt to changes in climate.
The goals of this position are to: 1) help the Great Lakes Climate Change team at The Conservancy build the knowledge and information foundation for developing effective, high impact adaptation strategies, 2) provide support for effective transfer of information both within The Conservancy and to partners and stakeholders on the topic of climate change adaptation, 3) provide assistance on the development of influential case studies based on The Conservancy’s ongoing work.

The Climate Change Research Assistant works directly with the Michigan Field Office/Great Lakes Program Climate Change Ecologist, and in collaboration with TNC’s Great Lakes Project science staff.   S/he is also likely to work with other science and policy staff in the Michigan Field Office, and may at times work with TNC personnel from the other states or other programs (e.g., the Worldwide Office Climate Change team).   S/he may also be asked to work in collaboration with others in the academic, business/industry, and environmental communities to learn/share information to help TNC become a respected and valued partner that provides a broadly informed climate adaptation strategy. Funding is currently available for a 18 Month period.
