Description

The Ethical Tea Partnership (ETP) is a not-for-profit organisation working to improve the lives of tea workers and their environment.

ETP’s work focuses on key sustainability challenges facing the global tea industry – working and living conditions for tea workers, gender inequality, farmer livelihoods, good agricultural practices, agrochemicals management and climate change.

We use a multi-stakeholder approach to address these issues, and work with a range of organisations including producer associations, local and multinational NGOs, UN agencies such as the FAO and UNICEF, institutional donors including IDH - Sustainable Trade Initiative, GIZ, and many others.

ETP’s work focuses on programmes that deliver change through addressing the underlying issues holding back the sustainability of the industry and tea communities and climate change is one of our most important areas of work.

ETP has over 50 member tea companies, ranging from large multi-national firms such as Unilever (PG Tips), Starbucks, Tata Global Beverages (Tetley), and Twinings, to Sri Lankan firms and specialist importers of Chinese tea.  ETP has a secretariat based in London, and a network of regional managers and consultants in all key global tea-growing regions.

Previous climate change work has included:

  • Mapping the impacts of climate change in tea-growing regions in Africa and Asia
  • Developing and implementing Climate Change Adaptation programmes enabling smallholder farmers to understand and address the challenges posed by climate change
  • Developing training packages and resources for a variety of stakeholders on climate change adaptation and mitigation
  • Developing specific projects for tea farmers and workers that support climate change adaptation and mitigation e.g. fuel-efficient cookstoves, solar lighting rollout, income diversification, tree production and planting etc.
  • Supporting improved energy management in tea factories through training, auditing, trialling improved energy management systems, developing business cases and promoting best practice

We are looking for a committed and experienced individual, who can drive forward ETP’s climate change programme. In particular, we are at a critical juncture in developing a large multi-stakeholder programme to achieve a carbon neutral industry in Kenya. We also have significant potential to scale up our climate change impact in countries as diverse as Malawi and India.

The postholder needs to be passionate about developing partnership programmes on climate change and the environment that will enable the industry and tea communities to have a sustainable future. Candidates need to have a strong background in climate change, in project development and in successfully managing large multi-stakeholder partnership projects. Candidates should also be experienced at working with a range of partners from different disciplines and cultural backgrounds. Candidates will need to be interested and willing to travel within Europe and to Africa and Asia.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a skilled and committed team whose work is making a significant difference. A range of working arrangements are possible, provided the post-holder can spend sufficient time in London and meet the travel requirements of the post. Salary will be commensurate with skills and experience. This is initially a one-year contract with possibilities for extension. Please send expressions of interest and a CV to recruitment@ethicalteapartnership.org by February 26th. As part of any recruitment process, ETP collects and processes personal data relating to job applicants. The organisation is committed to being transparent about how it collects and uses that data and to meeting its data protection obligations.
