Description

UNDP Harare would like to give an opportunity to one student within the field of Climate Change adaptation and disaster risk management to have a learning experience within their Climate change, Environment and Energy team.  The internship will initially be issued for a period of 3 months and subject to performance may be extended for a further 3 months.   The purpose of the internships is give students the opportunity to have a first-hand experience for them to build their capacity as part of their studies and to also make a contribution to the work of UNDP in Zimbabwe

Under the guidance of the Head of Poverty, Climate Change and Environment, and direct supervision of the Programme Analyst, the intern will have the opportunity to learn how to support climate change related disaster risk management.

The intern will be exposed to and will be taught on how to apply the knowledge they attain to execute tasks assigned to them in full compliance with UN/UNDP rules, regulations, policies and strategies.  They will also have an opportunity to work in close collaboration with the other operations sub-units, programme and projects’ staff in the CO to learn, exchange information and ensure consistent service delivery.

 


Duties and Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Head of Poverty, Climate Change and Environment, and direct supervision of the Programme Analyst, the intern will be responsible for:

  • Mapping out climate change disaster risk management initiatives in Zimbabwe which complement the work of UNDP
  • Assisting with the day to day project coordination related to DRM activities in particular M&E and documentation of case stories and good practices of disaster risk management efforts at national and district level.
  • Participating in relevant DRM workshops and meetings together with the UNDP climate change and environment team.
  • Depending on the interns interest and competence other task may also be discussed, e.g. support to develop a disaster risk database, district specific disaster risk analysis and planning, and support to conduction of DRM events.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in the fields of Climate Change, Environment, Resilience or DRM;
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

Experience:

  • Knowledge of UN systems is desirable, but not a requirement;
  • Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) and advance knowledge of web based management systems.
  • Knowledge of GIS is an advantage.

Language:

  • Fluency in the English is required.

Financial Issues:

Internships within the UN system are unpaid and subject to conditions the applicant must get familiar with prior to signing his/her internship agreement.

The costs associated with the internship must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements for travel, accommodation etc.

Conditions:

  • UNDP only accepts interns for a minimum of 6 weeks and a maximum of 6 months;
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents, illness or death during the internship;
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity;
  • Interns are responsible to arrange for their own visa and residence documents, and need to plan for these well in advance;
  • The purpose of the internship is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies; therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship;
