We are looking for a campaign assistant to strengthen our climate and energy campaign team in Turkey. Turkish government is planning to build 47 new coal fired power plants! Do you want to do something about it? Do you have a talent for creating positive change? Are you structured and well-organised and can you help organise others? If so, you might be the person we are looking for to join our team as a climate and energy campaign assistant.

Period: 1 April – 1 September 2009 / 20 hours a week

Location: Istanbul

Purpose:

Assist the Climate and Energy campaign in reaching their objectives, together with campaign team members.

The Climate and Energy campaign works to achieve regional impacts that, in turn, support the global campaign goals. The aims of the campaign are:

  • Campaigning to end the construction of new coal fired power plants and phase out existing ones in Turkey, and push the government to commit to clean, affordable and renewable solutions.
  • Campaigning to establish a new agreement in Copenhagen and have Turkish government to play a strong role.

Responsibilities:

Greenpeace Mediterranean operates a programme structure with campaign project teams designed to deliver specific objectives within the agreed goals of the campaign. The campaign assistant’s role within the programme is to aide the campaigner, by providing day to day project support, research, and to liaise with volunteers and other office staff on project needs.

All Greenpeace campaign assistants work to help the organisation deliver global campaign goals, which are reflected regionally and locally. This is achieved by being a team player within the Greenpeace Mediterranean Climate campaign team, within the regional office team and as a part of the regional campaign team.

This post is based at the Greenpeace Mediterranean office in Istanbul but will involve occasional travel within the country. The job entails working with Greenpeace colleagues in other offices within the Greenpeace Mediterranean.

Campaign Work

  1. Help delivering outputs specified in the campaign plan and project teams.
  2. Assist undertaking specific campaign project work including: non-violent direct action, public communication and engagement activities, media work, political and corporate work and the use of legal and scientific approaches to issues, attendance at conferences, meeting with and working with other organisations and individuals in civil society.
  3. Contribute to the development of campaign planning both within the region and internationally.
  4. Help undertaking appropriate research and utilising information to meet campaign objectives.
  5. Meet project and office deadlines and manage personal workload accordingly.
  6. Keep Campaigner informed on campaign developments and produce regular updates to office and campaign team(s).
  7. Work on campaign project teams when needed.

Team work

Work and communicate continuously, openly and co-operatively with other team members
  • Respond to challenges, explore ideas and take initiatives in all aspects of team work.
  • Adapt roles within team as appropriate, including playing supportive roles to other members of the team as necessary.
  • Take full part in the evaluation of campaign projects at their completion.
  • As and when necessary work with and supervise volunteer teams.

    Meetings

    Coordinate various project planning and regular coordination meetings, in close cooperation with the campaigner, in order to facilitate the planning and delivery of the project. Distribute the meeting notes to the core team regularly.

    Publications

    Assist preparing and oversight of the production of campaign publications/press releases/ cyber actions/mailouts in cooperation with the campaigner and communications officer, within the agreed budget and timelines, ensuring availability of materials consistent with and in support of campaign goals.

    Budgets

    Assist developing and monitoring campaign budgets, in cooperation with the campaigner and Finance Unit, in order to enable cost effectiveness and strategic expenditure.

    1. Maintain a high commitment to Greenpeace values.

    3. Undertake any other duties, appropriate to the post, as delegated by the Programme Director.
    4. Undertake travel sometimes for extended periods.

    Skills and Qualifications

    Language: Fluent in English and Turkish.

    Campaigning/Organisational Skills. Able to multitask in a fast paced environment. Good time management skills. Possesses proficient writing and communication skills and team player. Able to working under stress and meet deadlines.

    Computer: Proficient in word processing, spreadsheets, presentations and email.

    Budget Management. Able to follow up the operational budget. Creative and resourcefulness enough to make impacts on limited budgets.

    Strategic Thinking. Contribute to the development of campaign strategies. Assess and select the targets most relevant to achieving campaign objectives. Willing to explore new ideas and campaign options.
