Description

The  Climate  Advocacy  Officer  will  be  part  of  an  international  team  that  ICLEI  –  Local Governments for Sustainability establishes at  its new program office in Bonn, Germany. Bonn is the seat of the United Nations Climate Change Secretariat.  

Responsibilities:

Policy and Advocacy Coordination  

-  Fulfill ICLEI’s role as liaison to UNFCCC (Secretariat and bodies) for the Local
Governments and Municipal Associations Constituency  
-  Maintain relations to strategic partners in the governmental, business, NGO and expert sectors  
-  Coordinate policy and advocacy activities across local government associations and networks  
-  Develop, implement and lead advocacy strategies in support of ICLEI’s and other local government climate change programs  
-  Produce reports, briefing papers, articles, speeches and draft position papers  -  Promote the “World Mayors and Local Governments Climate Protection Agreement” and manage the subscription process  
-  Implement media strategies, address the media and professional audiences


Secretary, World Mayors Council  

-  Develop World Mayors Council membership  
-  Support the Council in its advocacy work, produce regular policy briefs, organize meetings etc.  

 

Requirements:

•  Degree / postgraduate qualification in a relevant subject such as Political or Social Science, Law, or similar  
•  Minimum of five years working experience in international environmental advocacy  


Experience:

•  Involvement climate change  
•  Working in an NGO environment  
•  Deep knowledge of multilateral environmental agreements, especially the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change  
•  Familiarity with Local Government


Abilities and Skills:

•  Pro-active attitude  
•  Organized working style; ability to work independently  
•  Analytical mind  
•  Excellent messenger: ability to communicate clearly, understandably and with due cultural sensitivity  
•  Proficiency in written and spoken English and fluency in at least one other language relevant to ICLEI’s work  


Terms and conditions:

The full-time position is available from November 2008, pending confirmation of funding by the funder. It will be based in Bonn, Germany.

International travel will be required. Communication with partners around the world may require work during unusual hours.  

The incumbent reports directly to the Secretary General. A competitive salary will be offered. 

This position will be filled subject to confirmation of funding by the funder.
