The Pembina Institute is seeking a bright and resourceful individual with an interest helping British Columbia move forward with climate change solutions. With guidance from Pembina staff, the successful candidate will support the Institute's work on climate change, B.C.'s carbon tax and electric vehicles in the province. The intern's responsibilities will include:

  • Interviewing staff from local governments and communities and reviewing the literature to understand the degree to which projects and investment decisions have been influenced by B.C.'s carbon tax.
  • Interviewing staff from local governments, communities, and businesses in B.C. to understand the actions they are taking to advance electric vehicles.
  • Developing communications materials (e.g. videos, reports, blogs, etc.) to make the research results accessible and engaging to local governments, communities, businesses, decision-makers and media.
  • Identifying effective forums and opportunities to disseminate communications materials.

Candidate Eligibility Requirements and Preferences

This position is being funded through the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS) internship program. Pembina has also applied for additional funding that would allow the timeframe for this position to be extended.

The successful candidate must be an under-graduate or graduate student (preferred) at SFU, UBC, UVIC or UNBC, and planning to return to full-time studies following the internship.

Candidate must be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with British Columbia's legislation and regulation.

The following are eligibility requirements for the additional funding that Pembina has requested:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment and
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act6.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Understanding of different climate change policy solutions (e.g. carbon taxes) and technology solutions (e.g. solar hot water systems, electric vehicle supply equipment).
  • Understanding of basic economics.
  • Experience using interviews to collect qualitative and quantitative information.
  • Ability to translate technical information into written materials for non-technical audiences.
  • Experience with other communication mediums (e.g. video) an asset, but not required.
  • Experience working with or for local governments and communities an asset, but not required.

Terms of Employment

The Pembina Institute is interested in hiring for this position to commence in early May. This is a full-time position at $19.34 / hour from May to August, with a possibility of extension into the fall of 2012 on part-time basis.

Limited travel within the province of B.C. may be required.
