Location Information: The International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) in collaboration with the Earth Institute and the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, seeks to hire an Assistant Director (AD) to provide administrative and programmatic support to the MA Program in Climate and Society (CS; see http://www.columbia.edu/cu/climatesociety). The CS aims to train a new generation of academics and professionals at the nexus of social science, climate science, and public policy. The IRI aims to enhance society's capability to understand, anticipate and manage the impacts of climate in order to improve human welfare and the environment, especially in developing countries. The position reports to the CS Director and the IRI Assistant Director for Science Management (ADSM), and is administered by the IRI.

Description:

Reporting primarily to the CS Director and also to the IRI ADSM, the AD is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the CS program as well as initiatives to build upon and improve the program. Position responsibilities include: coordination, development, and implementation of student and alumni programs (30%), and assuming responsibility for the related administrative functions (25%). With input from the CS Director, the AD will also arrange information sessions, recruitment events, and manage marketing as well as advertising initiatives (20%). The AD will regularly engage the IRI, providing regular updates on program planning and developments (15%). The position will also liaise with the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences' central admissions office to manage admission policies and coordinate the application process (10%). The AD will perform these responsibilities by: Providing academic and professional guidance for prospective, incoming, and current students; developing and maintaining online program information and alumni database; assisting the CS Director in managing budget and reviewing spending; managing casual payroll and scholarship awards; providing analysis and reporting on program initiatives and alumni successes, assisting faculty in administrative and curriculum needs and all other duties as assigned by the CS Director. Though most of the work of the AD will occur at the Morningside Campus, the AD will regularly interact with the IRI faculty and staff through frequent visits to the IRI at the Lamont Campus. The AD will also undertake travel as needed, for recruitment and marketing purposes.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or equivalent required. 3 years related experience required. Graduate degree in an area relating to climate and society topics strongly preferred. Demonstrated strong organization skills, including ability to successfully manage multiple projects; demonstrated excellent service oriented skills, required. Demonstrated proficiency in the use of MAC and PC computers and Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, Power Point) required; demonstrated capacity to undertake web-based research and to compile findings in succinct and informative reports is essential. Familiarity with financial or other database systems is a plus. Excellent interpersonal skills required, including superb written and spoken communications in English.
