Climate & Energy Lawyer (Brussels)

ABOUT THE ROLE

In this exciting, challenging role, we’ll look to an experienced lawyer to play a pivotal role developing and delivering a strategic and diverse programme of law and policy concerning climate change.  Working within the global context of efforts to mitigate climate change, the role focuses on the European low carbon transition, and in particular the process of working towards an ambitious legal framework for the 2030 climate and energy package. This role involves analyzing a complex legal, policy, and political terrain, identifying legal and political opportunities for intervention, and engaging with a wide range of civil society partners and stakeholders in government and industry.

 

This role is based in ClientEarth’s Brussels office, but will involve some travel within Europe.

 

ABOUT YOU

With a demonstrated track record in the law and interest in interdisciplinary analysis, you are willing and able to apply your strategic thinking and problem solving capabilities to a public interest law setting. You have excellent critical thinking and analytical abilities that will enable you to bring a rigorous but creative approach to the role of law in mitigating climate change. You have a strong understanding of EU climate law, environmental law, public law and EU institutional, policy and legislative processes; and ideally an understanding of EU State aid law and policy. Ideally, you also come with experience in, or a clear understanding of the importance of interdisciplinary analysis; and proven experience in advocacy and public policy development.  

 

You are adaptable, a confident public speaker and able to take initiative to work independently and to collaborate with others in develop relationships and strategies. In addition to your techical expertise, you are comfortable contributing to discussions on campaign dimensions and the development of political strategy.

 

You are committed to environmental issues and to urgent action on climate change.

This role sits within our Climate and Energy Programme, which aims to advance Europe’s transition to a low carbon, efficient and sustainable economy.  It will focus on all aspects of climate law but in particular on the need for developing an effective economy wide approach to regulating EU greenhouse gas emissions  and strategies for developing EU laws that  contribute to  unlocking the abatement  potential of a range of sectors, including power, transport, agriculture buildings and waste.
