  Greenpeace Canada is seeking an experienced campaigner to fill an available position with the organization. You must have at least two years experience in campaigning, communication or other related areas, and a proven track record on developing and implementing successful campaign strategies. You will have a demonstrated commitment to environmental issues, the culture of Greenpeace and activism.

Location:  Edmonton
Reports to: Climate and Energy Coordinator
Starting Annual Salary: $22.04 per hour; full-time 35 hours per week
Closing date for applicants: October 23, 2013
Duration: November 1, 2013 until June 1, 2014

Greenpeace Canada is an independently funded, nonprofit organization that works to protect the environment. We challenge government and industry to halt harmful practices by negotiating solutions, conducting scientific research, introducing clean alternatives, carrying out peaceful acts of civil disobedience and educating and engaging the public. As a Greenpeace Climate & Energy Campaigner you will be required to act as a campaign spokesperson and develop strategies and tools to effectively communicate the Tar Sands campaign to the:  media; community members; other Greenpeace national offices; Greenpeace International; foundations;  as well as to senior officials in government and industry. The successful applicant will have experience with making sound strategic campaign decisions, have strong communications skills, both verbal and written, be extremely well-organized and understand and support Greenpeace’s style of campaigning.  Bilingualism (English/French) and the ability to write well in both languages will be considered a strong asset.

Required Skills and Experience:

  1. A demonstrated commitment, knowledge and passion for environment and social justice issues;
  2. Excellent strategic thinking, negotiation and campaign planning skills;
  3. Demonstrated analytical skills;
  4. Ability to relate effectively and work collaboratively with people from diverse backgrounds including First Nations, Inuit, environmentalists, and policymakers;
  5. Excellent oral and writing communication skills including public speaking and presentation skills, as well  as strong listening abilities;
  6. Leadership and judgement skills;
  7. Ability to inspire and motivate volunteers and a passion for interacting with the public;
  8. Ability to remain calm and think on your feet in a fast-paced, creative environment;
  9. Ability to work independently, establish priorities, and proceed with objectives without supervision, yet participate effectively as part of a team;
  10. Flexible personality;
  11. Proven political experience, including lobbying  and political strategy;
  12. While academic or other prior knowledge of Tar Sands issues and the oil industry is highly desired a general understanding of these issues is required.

You will work with colleagues in Canada and around the world and you must be able to travel, including internationally. The ability to work weekends and evenings is sometimes required. 

Candidates should understand and support the Greenpeace campaign tactics, including the use of peaceful civil disobedience.
