Description

Living Oceans Society, through the Canada Summer Jobs Program, is seeking an individual who is passionate about the ocean and interested in marine conservation to work with our Vancouver and Sointula offices, as well as in Northern Vancouver Island, this summer.  Preference will be given to students in post-secondary education, pursuing a course of study relevant to Living Oceans’ work; and to First Nations students in the North Island region.

The position reports to the Clear the Coast Project Manager.  Clear the Coast is Living Oceans’ campaign aimed at raising awareness of the threat to the marine environment from marine debris, communicating solutions, and coordinating volunteers for beach clean-ups on Northern Vancouver Island. 

The successful applicant will assist with our Clear the Coast program, including organizing and participating in marine debris removal operations; conducting public outreach work, and participating fully in the summer activities of Living Oceans.  This position will be modified as necessary if Covid-19 restrictions continue into the summer months.  Flexibility will be key!

The successful candidate must have the following qualifications:

-Experience with backcountry travel and wilderness camping;

-a Class 5 BC driver’s licence

- Ability to work well individually and as a team member

- Good communication and organizational skills

- Ability to work outdoors, hiking over uneven terrain, working in and from boats

- Creativity and writing skills

- Meets the qualifications for the Canada Summer Jobs programme:

  1. is between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
  2. was registered as a full-time student during the preceding academic year;
  3. intends to return to school on a full-time basis during the next academic year;
  4. is a student in a post-secondary, CEGEP (Quebec only), vocational or technical program;
  5. is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act* and;
  6. is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations

*Sorry, foreign students are not eligible.

Roles and Responsibilities: 

Responsibilities Include:

- Field work (includes deploying and monitoring debris collection bags at alternating sites)

- Coordinating beach clean-up events

- Sorting debris by plastic types, recording debris data

- Social Media and other outreach

- Assisting with tabling at local events
