The Environmental Investigation Agency, a 501(c)(3) non-profit advocacy organization based in Washington DC, is seeking a motivated, organized and committed campaigner to join one of the most dynamic advocacy teams in Washington today. EIA’s Forest Campaign documents and exposes illegal logging and associated trade and supports civil society organizations engaged in forest governance reform around the world. EIA uses primary evidence obtained from in-depth research of illegal timber trade flows to push for systemic policy shifts to stem the demand and funding for these illegal activities.
Position description
As a member of ?the Forest Campaign Team, the China Trade and Policy Analyst will dedicate their energy and talents to the planning, execution and evaluation of EIA’s China-related campaigns and research. Their goals, fully aligned with EIA’s vision and priorities, will be to halt illegal logging, other illegal deforestation and related crimes, triggering changes in the international markets to support law enforcement, greater transparency, and improved forest governance globally. A significant portion of their work will be participating in the collection, analysis and use of key evidence, serving EIA’s game-changing campaigns. Reporting directly to the Asia Policy Specialist, the analyst will work in close coordination with the members of the Forest Team, articulating targeted strategies and a multi-continent vision.
Main Activities and Responsibilities
• Working in close collaboration with the Asia Policy Specialist and other Forest Team members, the Trade and Policy Analyst will be responsible for developing and implementing innovative strategies to halt illegal logging and other illicit deforestation to improve policies and enforcement in the East Asia region and forest governance globally.
• Conduct policy analysis and research of relevant laws and regulations as well as multilateral and bilateral policies affecting environmental issues, with particular emphasis on the East Asia region.
• Outreach to relevant stakeholders to build effective coalitions, including through organizing meetings and maintaining communications with key stakeholders in the private sector, government, civil society, media and academia.
• Contribute to investigations of forest related crimes and global supply chains of illegal timber and forest-risk commodities, including through analysis of trade data and online and field research.
• Drafting of robust analytical, research and investigative reports and briefing papers, and employing audiovisual techniques to document environmental abuses.
Essential Qualifications
• Minimum of Bachelor Degree in economics, political sciences, environmental policies, international development, or a related field; or significant experience in the field.
• Background in environmental policy, business, finance, economics, supply chain management, procurement and/or international trade policy.
• At least three years of experience in relevant fields.
• Strong language skills in verbal and written Mandarin Chinese.
• Possess strong research and analytical skills.
• Willingness to travel frequently to diverse environments (urban, rural).
• Strong demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, in particular a collaborative and cooperative approach to work, as well as an ability to network and to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of actors, across a variety of settings.
• Close attention to detail.
• Currently authorized to work legally in the United States on a full time basis.
Desirable Skills
• Experience in journalism, photojournalism, or documentary filmmaking.
• Proven track record of creating and maintaining dynamic social media campaigns.
• Experience working in China, willingness to outreach to civil society organizations and/or rural communities.
• Experience with database, trade network analysis, or other relevant analytical software programs.
• Technical experience with photographic and video equipment.
• Experience working with journalists and media to advance international campaign objectives.
• Strong language skills in verbal and written Japanese, Russian, Spanish, French, or other languages a plus.
