The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is a conservation organization dedicated to protecting wildlife and their habitat, active in almost 60 countries. Our vision is to save wildlife and wild places worldwide through science, conservation action, education, and inspiring people to value nature. WCS has been working in China since 1995, with focus on large mammals and their habitat. China is a key country for WCS due to its significant domestic biodiversity and large economic impact in Asia and Africa. WCS China is looking for a dynamic and committed Country Director who will drive the continued high performance levels of the China programme, leading on the delivery of efficiency, a highly professional and skilled staff, and strong financial resources.

Location:

Beijing (or negotiable with a significant portion of time (50%) in Beijing), China

Position Objectives:

  1. Oversee WCS’s Country Program in China. In consultation with senior colleagues assigned by WCS-Asia Program Director, lead the development and implementation of country program’s priorities, strategy, and approaches based on but not limited to WCS 2020 global strategy; lead or manage project development and implementation; oversee financial and administrative support for various projects and for the program as a whole; facilitate communication and coordination among different teams of WCS in the region and globally.
  2. Generate significant financial support for the WCS China program from domestic and international donors and lead high level corporate and foundation relationships.
  3. Promote wildlife conservation in China among national government units, provincial governments, international agencies, and China local non-governmental organizations; provide insights or recommendations to suitable stakeholders to influence policies that promote the long-term persistence of wildlife and wild lands in China; work with other country programs or regional teams on China overseas impact on species and landscapes that WCS care about.

Principle responsibilities:

  •  Leads and ensures that the WCS China Country Operations are managed effectively and efficiently in all key areas – Conservation, Finance and Administration, People & Organizational Development, Partnership Development, Fundraising, Advocacy, and Communications – fulfilling WCS Asia's vision and delivering on the targets set for its Key Performance Indicators in China;
  • Leads on the development and effective implementation of WCS China's country strategy in line with the WCS 2020 Strategic Plan;
  • Establishes strong partnerships for WCS in China and effectively represents the organization towards internal and external stakeholders;
  •   Ensures that WCS China's legal and reporting requirements are met and that WCSs policies, procedures, standards and Code of Ethics are being adhered to;
  •  Contributes to the regional management team and the efficient management of WCS in its Asia Region.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Deep understanding on policies and conservation status in China;
  •  Minimum master's degree in biodiversity conservation, natural resource management or related field. Candidates with strong policy and/or fundraising backgrounds are encouraged to apply;
  • Experience in written and verbal communication in both Chinese and English;
  • At least 10years’ experience at a senior level in the following areas:
  •   Managing complex or multiple projects, including staffing, workloads, and finances under deadlines;
  • Team leadership skills and supervisory experience;
  • Fundraising and donor development;
  • Working within the Chinese conservation and policy context;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work in a range of cultural contexts;  Adheres to WCS's values, which are: Respect, Accountability & Transparency, Innovation, Diversity & Inclusion, Collaboration, Integrity.
