Description
Make a Difference! The Gola Forest Programme is an exciting and pioneering long-term project to conserve the globally important Gola Rainforest National Park in Eastern Sierra Leone.  The Programme employs 100 national protected area staff and manages the forest from Kenema Town; 2 hours drive for the Gola forest.  The RSPB seeks an experienced and enthusiastic protected area specialist to support the Programme to deliver its objectives over the next 2 years.
 
The post holder should have a MSC or BSC in a relevant Environmental Science , extensive experience of protected areas in Africa and an exemplary track record of protected area work. Extensive experience of project planning, management and leadership is required. Communication, diplomacy and the ability to negotiate will be  key skills essential to the success of this role. The successful candidate will be highly motivated and be able to enthuse and engage their team to achieve the project goals.
 

The post-holder will support the Protected Area Manager, of GRNP providing high calibre technical advice and guidance in all aspects of the work.   In particular, this will include:

 

  • Providing technical support, advice and guidance to the Protected Area Manager in day to day planning and decision making in the management of the GFP.
  • Support the Protected Area Manager in the appropriate deployment, use and management of other project resources, including human and material resources.
  • Support the Protected Areas Manager in the development and implementation of suitable organisational systems and procedures
  • Work with the Protected Area Manager to ensure sound financial management and control
  • Management of a selection of donor funded projects, including adherence to appropriate financial procedures and controls, and financial and activity reporting. 
  • Support and advise the Protected Area Manager in the recruitment of contract staff, negotiation of contracts and ensuring the respect of all applicable regulations concerning these staff.
  • Provide technical advice and training inputs for protected area planning, monitoring and management.
  • Support the Protected Area Manager in the management of any consultants engaged under the programme.
  • Develop key political relations with local, and national stakeholders.
  • Maintaining good relations among the project partners and with other important stakeholders, especially the local communities.
