Chief Horticulturist

(GRADED AS CHIEF AGRICULTURAL TECHNICIAN)
(Salary Level 8)

Free State National Botanical Garden

The ideal candidate should have a National Diploma in Horticulture, coupled with at least at least 2-5 years

relevant post –qualification experience and in possession of a valid unendorsed code B driver’s licence with at

least one year practical driving experience.

 

The appointee will be tasked with:

• The development and maintenance of the estate and nursery section. • managing and developing staff. • develop and maintain plant displays in the thematic areas/demonstration gardens. • monitor and participate in the collection and propagation of plants • contribute to budget planning and control expenditures. • supervise the section team, conduct performance appraisals, mentor, coach train and discipline staff. • schedule and approve leave applications and identify and address staff attendance problems. • monitor and maintain facilities, implement interpretation and information plans for the section, handle garden and horticultural enquiries, liaise with societies and green industry. • implement emergency planning procedures, participate and comply with Health and Safety and Environmental legislation, policies and procedures • ensure Implementation of the BGCI (Botanical Garden Conservation International) targets.

 

The candidate must be computer literate and able to communicate effectively and efficiently in English and at

least one other official language. The person must be willing to work overtime regularly as part of weekend duty

and travel.

 

SANBI offers an annual salary of R 161 970. In addition to the above salary, SANBI offers fringe benefits which

include attractive medical and pension schemes.
