Mission statement: Global Wildlife Conservation protects endangered species and habitats through science-­- based field action. Preserving the planet’s threatened and dwindling wildlife is one of the greatest challenges facing humanity. There are almost 20,000 species of plants and animals worldwide facing the danger of extinction, including 13 percent of birds, 25 percent of mammals, and 41 percent amphibians. We promote greater understanding of the current extinction crisis and global threats to biodiversity and the environment. GWC bases decisions on solid science and conducts all operations using sound environmental and social ethics. We are conducting innovative and unprecedented field expeditions, scientific research, and wild lands conservation.
Job Description:
Chief Financial Officer
Global Wildlife Conservation seeks a self-­-motivated individual who has the background and training to manage the finances of a growing international nonprofit organization. The successful candidate must be able to take ownership of the position to oversee all aspects of the organization’s financial information and to assist scientists and conservationists who work worldwide for wildlife conservation. A commitment to the environment and GWC’s mission is critical.
The successful candidate will have experience with accounting, bookkeeping, and audits, preferably within a nonprofit environment. The CFO will be knowledgeable of current financial best-­-practices, be able to analyze financial information, and generate required statements and reports. Knowledge of Abila (Sage Nonprofit and MIP) fund management software is a plus.
Additional skills include: self-­-motivation, the ability to work on a team, clear and effective communication skills, strong analytical and organizational abilities, and integrity. The CFO will work to achieve GWC’s goals in collaboration with the GWC’s Board of Directors, staff, and external partners. The CFO will report to the COO.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The CFO will perform the following and other duties as assigned:
Financial and Accounting
• Oversee accounting and financial systems.
• Ensure that adequate funds are available for GWC to carry out its programs and that the organization operates within budget guidelines.
• Oversee international financial transactions and evaluate partner financial and accounting systems.
• Bookkeeping: Oversee staff bookkeeping and reconciliation of accounts.
• Internal financial statements: Prepare financial statements monthly for management review. Prepare budget versus actual reports on a monthly basis for COO and CEO review.
• Budget: work with management to prepare annual budgets for review and approval by the Board.
• Internal Control: Develop processes and manage internal control of financial information.
• Financial management and reporting: Manage financials in accounting software and coordinate with scientists responsible for expenditures and grant management. Produce monthly reports for management and others for grant income and expenses.
• Restricted and unrestricted funds: Manage restricted and unrestricted balances for the organization and report monthly to management.
• Money management: Oversee cash outflows to contracted individuals who are performing grant work. Be familiar with foreign cash inflows and outflows and currency differences. Approve vendor payments.
• Fiscal sponsors: Oversee fund distribution to sponsored partners and report to partners on at least a monthly basis.
• Investments: Oversee and manage GWC short term and long term investments, including all work with external investment managers, with oversight from the Investment Committee.
• Endowments: Oversee and manage GWC endowments with oversight from the Investment Committee.
• Payroll: Oversee payroll data from third party provider. In States where GWC employs staff, oversee compliance with payroll filings and work with outside vendor to ensure GWC complies with State laws for payroll withholding and unemployment taxes. Work with third party retirement vendor to ensure compliance with Erisa.
• Auditor: Coordinate audit with external auditors.
• Donor accounting: Oversee tracking of donor contributions and donor management software. Coordinate with general ledger accounting.
• Official filings: Coordinate IRS filings as well as State filings on behalf of GWC. Oversee all financial aspects of GWC, including accounting, bookkeeping, and audits.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate should have the following qualifications:
• Commitment to and passion for GWC’s mission, vision, and values.
• 8+ years of experience in nonprofit finance and accounting.
• Experience managing a small financial team, including external accountants and auditors.
• Strong knowledge of current wildlife conservation issues and trends, as well as significant experience in wildlife conservation and related fields.
• Strong communications skills, including writing, editing, correspondence, and public speaking.
• Foreign language skills a plus, especially Spanish, French, Portuguese, Chinese, and/or Bahasa.
• Bachelor’s degree required, CPA or advanced degree in a relevant field preferred.

GWC offers an excellent benefits package and a competitive salary that is commensurate with experience. This position will be located in Austin, TX, USA. It is expected that the CFO will spend significant time in Austin on organizational management, but also travel for specific operations.
