The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for the financial management of Greenpeace USA, an organization with an annual budget of approximately $37 million and a full time staff of more than 500 employees. This position oversees all accounting functions, budgeting, financial reporting, regulatory compliance, cash flow management, investments, and directing financial controls and policies of Greenpeace Inc, a 501c(4) organization, as well as Greenpeace Fund, a 501c(3) organization.  The CFO heads a six-person Finance Department, and leads the development of the organization’s financial policies and strategies.  Additionally, the CFO will be responsible for providing executive leadership, vision, and oversight for the organization and serve as a collaborative member of the senior management team providing strategic and accurate financial advice to the Executive Director and the Board.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

  Strategy and Leadership

  • Serve as part of the senior management team and collaboratively work together to develop organizational strategic goals and objectives.
  • Provide strategic guidance to the senior management team on financial planning and fiscal management.
  • Serve as the financial liaison to the Board of Directors, the Finance Committee, Audit Committee and Investment Committee and effectively communicate and present critical financial matters at Board of Director meetings.
  • In conjunction with the Executive Director, set the organization’s tone at the top to ensure all financial policies and procedures are properly implemented and adhered to by all Greenpeace staff.
  • Supervise and mentor all staff within the Finance Department and ensure effective performance measure objectives are set for each member of the department.
  • Develop strong internal relationships that evolve around the introduction and implementation of budgetary/financial processes and work to establish the confidence of the staff.
  • Liaison directly with Greenpeace International for all financial related matters.
  • Work with financial colleagues around the world on global financial initiatives.
  • Ensure that the Finance Department models best practices in providing services and support to other Greenpeace Departments and Greenpeace organizations worldwide.

  Financial Management and Oversight

  • Coordinate the creation, development, and monitoring of the organization’s budget and projection processes in alignment with its strategy and plan.
  • Advise, inform, and hold accountable senior management on matters affecting financial planning, results and reporting.
  • Establish and measure financial benchmarks for the organization.
  • Assess the organization’s performance against both short / long term strategy as well as the organization’s budget.
  • Analyze new business initiatives to provide insight to the Executive Director and senior management team.
  • Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions.
  • Responsible for the development and effective implementation of all financial policies, procedures and the internal control structure for Greenpeace Inc. and Greenpeace Fund.
  • Ensure preparation of monthly financial results for quarterly/annual financial forecasts to assist in short and long-term financial planning. 
  • Analyze and interpret monthly financial results/trends; direct the development of financial management reports, and present findings and specific recommendations to the Board, Executive Director, senior management team and external audiences as appropriate. 
  • Ensure compliance with all Greenpeace International reporting requirements.
  • Primarily responsible for the relationships with outside financial institutions and investment advisors.  Work with outside investment advisors and the Investment Committee of the Board to develop appropriate Investment Guidelines for investment and reserve funds and ensure asset allocations are in accordance with established investment policy guidelines.
  • Monitor day-to-day cash and investment operations, ensuring policies and practices are in place to maximize cash flow and interest earnings on excess cash.
  • Monitor and ensure that all service providers are providing appropriate custodial, reporting, pricing, and services.
  • Strengthen existing or create new operational systems, processes and procedures that support effective, efficient, and responsive accounting to the organization.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting or Business Administration with a CPA certification and/or MBA preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive increase in responsibility in financial leadership.
  • Non-profit organization experience a plus but not required.
  • Experience in creating and giving presentations to Boards and committees.
  • Experience in working with a 501(c) (3) and 501(c) (4) organizations is a strong plus.
  • Experience with grant tracking and accounting a plus.
  • Ability to communicate and present results to different audiences at various levels throughout the organization.
  • Excellent project management skills with a proven ability to manage significant initiatives across functional lines and work with various team members in driving meaningful change to the business.
  • A strong record as an effective, team-oriented leader and manager of people with a demonstrated ability to develop and motivate staff.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • High level of integrity with a professional attitude in all dealings.
  • Excellent judgment, discretion, and diplomacy and comfortable making independent decisions.
  • A strong attention to detail and willingness to support the Finance team in delivering high quality reporting.
  • Strong Excel skills required.
  • Interest in innovative process design.
